Full throttle despite the storm – Frequency: Stormy on and off the stage

The first official Frequency day almost fell through due to an impending storm, but after a one-hour safety break, everything went back to normal. With RAF Camora, Jason Derulo, Fever 333 and Co., the musical program also matched the cheering of the mainly young visitors. Today we continue with Annenmay Kantereit, Apache 207 and Anne-Marie.

At around 5:05 p.m., Frequency organizer Harry Jenner had to involuntarily enter the stage for the second time in two days to spread bad news. On the warm-up day, the uncomprehending audience threw bottles at him because of the closure of the indoor area in front of the headliner SSIO. On Thursday, in front of the main stage, those present were more understanding. Wind gusts of up to 110 km/h and a hailstorm were announced, the main festival area had to be completely cleared at short notice and the German musician Kummer had to break off his set after two and a half numbers. But safety comes first and after a good hour and a few barriers thrown over by the wind, the all-clear could be given without major problems and the program continued with a slight delay. who had to cancel his set completely. The Fever 333 that followed him started a bit late, but showed the most energy of the day even on the shortened set. Frontman Jason Butler didn’t climb the balustrades again, but he did jump, scream and run his heart out. Unfortunately, only a few of those present on the hard stone floor of the Green Stage were carried away by the powerful melange of hardcore, punk, rap and alternative rock, but they showed with mosh pits and rowing inserts that the hard riffs on the Frequency are as good as, but not quite died. Connecting announcements about women, equality and people of color included, the Californians once again proved with a lot of pressure that they are probably more movement than just a band. The Glass Animals gathered significantly more interested people on the Space Stage on the large area. The Oxford quartet achieved a late triumph with their hit “Heat Waves” from their 2020 studio album “Dreamland”. It wasn’t until a year and a half after the album was released that the track caught on, for a number of reasons, but the rest of the set, meandering between indie and dream pop, also had its merits. Indie and guitar sounds have long since become a rarity in the new Frequency era. There were also loyal but few fans at Palaye Royale, who will be coming to the Gasometer solo in February. X-Factor winner James Arthur clearly lost the long-distance duel with RAF Camora and MC Bonez, as expected.Feast for opennessThe warm-up -Day rapper SSIO, which was postponed to Thursday’s opener slot, attracted fans in the early afternoon in the scorching heat. The show was tiring for the politically correct taste police, but the party factor was high. Ironically offensive announcements like “I want to see bodily harm here” or “we’re working on the insurance claim so that the Austrian police have something to do” were of the rather harsh kind, with songs like the rhythmically simple “HULI” the Bonner had with Persian But the sympathies quickly take root on his side. A few hundred meters away, the US duo 100 Gecs spoke to a handful of viewers at a good 35 degrees from the heart of their generation. A melange of electro, hip-hop, death metal, alternative rock and dada mixed with autotune, funny hats and psychedelic videos. A feast for the tolerant and open-minded, who celebrate and preach community and togetherness – and are therefore the stark contrast to SSIO. The Green Stage was a few minutes late during the day due to weather-related circumstances, a famous gig by James Arthur still nothing stood in the way. The headliners Cypress Hill, longtime summer festival regulars in our part of the world, had to do without their frontman Sen Dog, who has been on tour for a while after a medical emergency in May. Colleague B-Real could not quite make up for his absence despite the greatest possible effort. On the other hand, there was a large crowd on the Space Stage. US rapper 24KGoldn already turned the area in front of the stage into a madhouse with his top hit “Mood”, but then local hero RAF Camora and his sidekick Bonez MC also came along enthusiastic about the sheer mass of people who cheered him on from the furthest corners of the terrain. So you can probably already congratulate him on the biggest crowds of the weekend. Between songs like “Zukunft” or “Other League” something unreleased was smuggled in, torches were lit, cell phone lights were activated and the wave was practiced. With Bonez MC and the constantly appearing Gzuz, of course, the programmatic “187” calls could not be missing. The conclusion with the fireworks was only logical: big, don’t mess. Jason Derulo had to be satisfied with a few fewer fans at the end, but he thrilled with a strong pop voice, snake-like dancers and a whole series of hits, which made him one of the most popular made TikTok stars thrive. “Wiggle”, “In My Head”, “It Girl” or the courageous Bocelli cover of “Time To Say Goodbye” – nothing was left unplayed. Light fare, but with a lot of fun and joy – suitable for the festival. Today we continue with Apache 207 and Annenmaykantereit, among others.
