Funding of 6.2 million euros allocated by ADEME to the Prénidem project led by Global Bioenergies

€4.4m awarded to Global Bioenergies, €1m awarded to Ajinomoto Foods Europe and €0.7m awarded to ARD, the other two members of the consortium

Financing in the form of 60% grant (non-refundable) and 40% repayable advances subject to the achievement of technical and commercial milestones, payment in several installments over the duration of the project including an initial installment of 15%.

Evry, March 14, 2023: Global Bioenergies announces that it has received State support as part of the call for projects “Biosourced products and industrial biotechnologies” led by ADEME, in partnership with Ajinomoto Foods Europe, a leader in fermentation industry, and ARD, a specialist in the scaling up and exploitation of biotechnological processes. This project runs until September 2025.

The project implements the so-called “two-step” production pathway on which Horizon 2 is based. The first step corresponds to the conversion of waste sugars into DMA (also called “prenic acid”). The production of this metabolic intermediate is carried out in an industrial-scale fermenter operated by Ajinomoto Foods Europe. The second step consists in converting this DMA into isobutene within the production unit belonging to Global Bioenergies and operated by the company ARD on its Pomacle-Bazancourt site.

The first objective of the project is to promote the commercial applications of bio-based isobutene derivatives, in the make-up market but also in the high-octane number renewable fuel additives currently sought after by Formula 1 players.

The second objective is to optimize the technology in order to reduce the production costs of biobased isobutene and its derivatives.

The project will benefit the development of new green production sectors on French territory, by responding to strategic issues of economic sovereignty, income and job creation.

Yves Duquesnoy, Deputy Managing Director of Ajinomoto Foods Europe, comments: “Our collaboration with Global Bioenergies dates back to 2021 and has gone crescendo: we have managed to scale up the organic production process for DMA to 160,000 liters. We are very happy to be able to optimize industrial production thanks to state support. »

Philippe Aubry, Deputy Managing Director at ARD, says: “We have been supporting Global Bioenergies since 2014, and are bringing our know-how to this project to contribute to the industrialization of this radically innovative process. We produce the biocatalyst for the second stage on an industrial-scale fermenter (180,000 liters), and carry out the second stage itself (bioconversion of DMA into isobutene) on the Global Bioenergies reactor. »

Bernard Chaud, Director of Industrial Strategy at Global Bioenergies, adds: “This State funding will allow us to optimize our Horizon 2 production chain and prepare for the commercial deployment of the ViaViridia plant, which corresponds our Horizon 3, by offering significant volumes of bio-based isobutene and derivatives to our customers and prospects. »
