Thousands of people paid their last respects to English football legend Sir Bobby Charlton in Manchester.

The 1966 world champion died last month at the age of 86. On Monday, numerous fans said goodbye to the Manchester United icon as the funeral procession with the coffin drove past the Old Trafford stadium, as the British news agency PA reported.

Among those who attended the funeral service in Manchester Cathedral were the heir to the British throne and President of the English Football Association FA, Prince William, England coach Gareth Southgate and Manchester United coaching icon Sir Alex Ferguson.

Revered as a national hero

Charlton, whose coffin was decorated with white roses, was honored as a national hero in England. In 1966 he won the World Cup with the English national team in his own country with a 4-2 win against the Federal Republic of Germany. The long-time Manchester United professional had been suffering from dementia since 2020.
