In “Furies”, Marina Foïs lends her features to the Fury, a woman responsible for bringing peace to the Parisian underworld. Over the course of the episodes, we discover that she is suffering from an illness which diminishes her greatly. What is she suffering from?
In Furies, the new French series from Netflix released online on March 1, Marina Foïs lends her features to Selma aka the Fury, a strong and ruthless woman responsible for maintaining peace and order between the different clans of the Parisian underworld .
But beneath her appearance as a mythological character, capable of disarming any enemy with an armlock, Selma has many flaws. She is indeed suffering from an unknown illness which seems to be weakening her more and more. This is also why she gets closer to the character of Lyna (Lina El Arabi). But what is this strange disease?
Neurological disease?
In the first episode, viewers discover that Selma has tremors in her right hand. In order to stop this phenomenon, the latter takes medication which takes effect immediately.
But that’s not the only symptom we discover in the series. In episode 7, Selma loses consciousness and suffers from convulsions. An event which suggests that, without treatment, his state of health could deteriorate very quickly.
Based on the symptoms, Selma suffers from a neurological disease. A hypothesis all the more plausible as she receives calls several times from a neurologist. Two diseases seem to correspond to these symptoms.
Parkinson’s disease: 80% probable
The first hypothesis that comes to mind is obviously Parkinson’s disease, which most often results in tremors, which initially only affect one side of the body, the right or the left. The treatment of this degenerative disease can also cause seizures.
The only element that could make us doubt this diagnosis: the tremors occur when the person is at rest and disappear when they are moving. But the Fury’s tremors occur when she has just fought. His muscles are therefore not completely relaxed. An element which could therefore make us doubt this hypothesis.
Multiple sclerosis: 50% probable
Multiple sclerosis is another neurological disease that can cause tremors and seizures. This disorder is, however, accompanied by other symptoms such as muscle weakness, partial paralysis of a limb or even limitation of walking.
Elements that do not seem to affect Selma since she manages to fight without difficulty. Unless the treatment allows it to stop these effects of the disease.
These two diagnoses are obviously hypothetical, and in no way replace a professional opinion formulated by the medical profession.
The writers of Furies will perhaps have a surprise in store for us in season 2, if Netflix were to order it. One thing is certain, if there is season 2, Selma’s illness will probably take an important place in the plot.
