With “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” the one-armed Amazon from “Fury Road” returns to the end times. What can viewers expect?
In 2015, cinema audiences got to know Imperator Furiosa as the one-armed epitome of an Amazon with razor-short hair and black war paint. Although Tom Hardy (46) played the taciturn title hero instead of Mel Gibson (68) for the first time in “Mad Max: Fury Road”, Charlize Theron (48) stole the show thanks to her passionate performance Full throttle the show. From May 23rd, in George Miller’s (79) prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”, the audience will finally find out how an innocent girl became the war-experienced Furiosa, who is in the service of the monster Immortan Joe.
Battle of the tyrants – that’s what it’s all about
As the world ends, young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy, 28) is kidnapped from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a massive biker horde led by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth, 40). As they roam the wasteland, they come across the citadel ruled by Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants battle for supremacy, Furiosa must endure dangerous trials while gathering the means to find her way home.
Without Max, but again with maximum bombast
As the central villain of “Furiosa,” Marvel star Chris Hemsworth can let off steam with thieving joy. Contrary to initial assumptions and despite visual similarities, he does not embody the young version of the “Fury Road” antagonist Immortan Joe, but a previously completely unknown figure. And since apparently nothing connects in the Wasteland like a common enemy, Hemsworth’s denial plays a major role in Furiosa ultimately becoming Immortan Joe’s right-hand (albeit one-armed) hand. So the enforcer we came to know, fear and love almost ten years ago.
At the latest when Taylor-Joy’s hair and arm disappear and she resorts to motor oil war paint, it becomes clear why she was chosen as the young version of Theron. Not despite, but precisely because of her petite, almost fairy-like stature, her transformation carries with it a particular tragedy. The end times have no mercy and what doesn’t kill you makes you more furious.
Since Max Rockatansky and Imperator Furiosa only met – or rather drove – during the plot of “Fury Road”, fans will logically have to do without the rager in the prequel. But not the typical Miller horsepower bombast and the many practical effects that should definitely be experienced in the cinema.
