Furnishing a baby room: ideas for equipment and design

Once there has been a baby, planning for a baby room will soon be the order of the day. You can find out what you really need here. Plus more tips and inspiration for setting up. A summary list can be found at the end of the article.

Baby cot for the offspring

Each family has to clarify for themselves whether a family bed is an option (here you will find an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of a family bed). If you decide against it, for example one is suitable Extra bed for the first time with newborns. This is practically docked to the parents’ bed in the bedroom. So the offspring is close by – which can be beneficial when the little ones have a lively appetite.

An alternative is the classic one Cot. For safety reasons, you should make sure that there are small gaps between the bars so that the child does not get caught in them. An adjustable slatted frame is advantageous, so you don’t have to bend down so low at first, but you can lower the bed over time so that the offspring does not fall out as a toddler.

Tip: Furniture that grows with the child can be practical and save money because it is used over a longer period of time. The baby cot then becomes a cot without bars and, if that is too short, a children’s sofa!

Further equipment for the baby bed

A cot doesn’t take much. The mattress should be firm and air-permeable. The Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) advises against pillows as well as nests and sheepskins in the baby bed in order to avoid overheating or backlogging of breath. Breath backlog is when the baby breathes in its own air again and thus receives too little oxygen.

A blanket can also be problematic as the baby can pull it over the face. Therefore, a Sleeping bag. The correct size is calculated as follows: body size of the baby – head length of the baby + ten to 15 centimeters, so that the offspring still has room to kick and grow. The neck circumference of the sleeping bag should not be larger than the head circumference of the baby. If you want to use a blanket, you should choose a flat model, fold it under the mattress at the foot end and cover the child only up to the chest. First put the baby in the bed so that his feet touch the lower edge of the bed.

Matching changing table

Those who do not rely entirely on diaper-free will definitely need a changing table. Furniture for changing is available in different designs as changing table, changing shelf or wall changing shelf as well as separately available changing attachments, e.g. B. for an existing chest of drawers. When making your selection, consider the size of the lying surface and do not choose it too small. On the one hand, the child still has enough space to kick around or move around and, on the other hand, part of the area is ideal for storing changing utensils, which are then within reach. The height of the changing table is also an important point, especially for you. Choose the height so that you can wrap relaxed in an upright position. On the changing mat you put a changing mat, which is best washable.

Practical: Changing dressers usually have several drawers, sometimes open compartments for storage. Shelves also offer storage space for utensils and clothing. A changing top is ideal for an existing chest of drawers or a new one can be used later as soon as the child is dry.

More storage space with a wardrobe

The number of baby clothes is often manageable at the beginning. However, if you cannot manage with the space of the changing table, you should think about buying a wardrobe. Over time, the equipment will certainly increase, so that sooner or later one will be needed anyway. If you decide on a children’s wardrobe, you will probably notice that they often have one or more rails for hanging clothes. Since this is usually not necessary for children’s clothing, especially for babies, you make perfect use of the space with hanging storage. Towels, bed linen, care products and other things for the baby can also be stowed in it.

The right lighting

You create the basic lighting with a ceiling lamp in the middle of the room. A plus point is a dimmable lamp, so that you can always adapt the lighting to the current situation, because there are different lighting requirements in the baby room. It should be well-lit for changing diapers, rather subtle for breastfeeding or feeding, and it should be possible to darken the room for baby sleep. A night light can help if you are afraid of the dark. Otherwise, a multi-section ceiling lamp that illuminates different areas is helpful, but also selective lighting, e.g. B. with wall lights or table lamps is useful (e.g. for a quiet corner).

Textiles for comfort

As in all other rooms, the following applies in the baby room: Textiles make a room really cozy! Roller blinds or curtains help to darken the room and bring a feel-good atmosphere into the room. In addition, carpets make the floor more cozy.

Tips for wall design

Babies see blurred at the beginning of their lives, but can perceive different patterns and shapes as well as brightness. Visual acuity continues to develop with age. Which wall design you choose is not relevant for your children at first, but wall paint & Co. contribute to a beautiful ambience – and colors also affect our mood!

Light colors provide optical space and are particularly advantageous for small rooms, as dark colors can quickly become overwhelming. Delicate and light colors such as a light green or yellow as well as beige or pastel tones are ideal here.

A corner to cuddle

If the spatial conditions allow, you can also set up a cozy corner in the baby room. This is ideal for breastfeeding or feeding, but also just for cuddling, reading or auditioning. A small sofa, a rocking chair or an armchair make the corner cozy and give you enough space for your cuddle time. A blanket and pillow should not be missing here.
