Furniture & Mattress: a new studio by developers from Braid, Carto and Ethereal opens its doors

Independent studios continue to be founded regularly, and after the pandemic which has upset the world and therefore the video game industry, many developers are choosing to work together, but at a distance. This is the case of Furniture & Mattressa new team with prestigious names.

Furniture & Mattress was indeed founded by David Hellman, Nick Suttner and Nicolas Recabarren, who were respectively artists on Braidscreenwriter of map and developer ofEthereal, independent games whose reputation is second to none. The first project of the young studio is still unknown, but David Hellman will handle animation and art direction, Nick Suttner will handle writing and production, while Nicolas Recabarren will program the game by designing the game design. The studio will also call on Tomas Batisa (Shadow of the Colossus Remake, Ethereal, Per Aspera) to compose the soundtrack and the sound design. In view of the previous games created by each, it will still be necessary to expect a jigsaw puzzlethe co-founders declare:

When working on a puzzle, sometimes you have to make a big mess before putting things back together. You have to go through some chaos before you find the right order. Drawing can be like that, and many things in life too, on a personal scale and on a large societal scale too. These are some of the things we explore in our game mechanics and story.

I love puzzle games and playing with surprising new mechanics, but they rarely keep me hooked to the end. I wanted to create a cohesive world where you’re not just solving puzzles because it’s interesting, but because you care about other characters’ needs and want to help. So I contacted Nick to help me build it.

We’ve all been making games in one way or another for a long time, so it was important for us to do it in a healthy way – by tackling something within our reach, paying us right, and sharing the creative vision of the game. It was also essential to find great partners to work with for the things that we cannot do ourselves, like Astra Fund and Popagenda. We want to give this game its best chance of success. From the first conversation we had with Astra, we felt cosmically aligned with their mission and values. Their support allows us to maintain our independence and self-publish the game we want to make, and it’s a real pleasure to work with them.

Because yes, Furniture & Mattress already has the financial support ofAstra Fundproducer of many puzzle games as Rhythmos, StarStuff, Paper Trail or Schrodinger’s Cat Burglar. But to discover the studio’s first game, we will have to wait. You can find map to €18.99 on Gamesplanet.
