Further danger looms – long wait for new road to Guntschach

Huge masses of stones thundered down Guntschacher Strasse in Maria Rain in mid-December, cutting off around 50 residents from the outside world. One month after the rockfall, the people of Guntschach are hoping for a quick solution. But nothing should come of it.

When around 100 cubic meters of rock from the Hemmafelsen fell onto Guntschacher Strasse on December 15 last year, it was almost a miracle that no one was injured. Because shortly before the rockfall, a school bus passed the only connecting road to the small town of Guntschach. Since then, the 50 residents have had to plan a 30-kilometer detour. “We’ve gotten used to it, but now the trip to Maria Rain takes around 45 minutes,” says a Guntschacher in an interview with “Krone”. And that is likely to remain the case for a few months. Inspection should bring clarity “We must now sit down with the authorities and see whether there is an alternative to Guntschacher Straße,” explains Maria Rain’s Mayor Franz Ragger. If that is not the case, Guntschacher Strasse must be repaired. And that could take several months. “Nothing will happen before June,” the residents of Guntschach are annoyed. According to Mayor Ragger, the meeting with the responsible authorities should take place on January 23. Residents organize themselves While the municipality is looking for a longer-term solution together with the responsible authorities, the 50 residents of the village are organizing themselves deposited in the village and one of us then fetches them.” Grocery shopping is also organized together. “Then everyone doesn’t have to drive individually. That saves money and time,” is the tenor. After all, the people of Guntschach have to go as far as Rottenstein and then they can only drive to Ferlach or Maria Rain. “We have agreed with the mayor that we will continue to transport the Guntschacher,” explains Florian Poganitsch from the Valentine ferry. “We will clear the emergency route, but driving on it is not without risk,” says Ragger in an interview with “Krone”. Therefore, the mayor appeals to the personal responsibility of the residents to be careful.
