Schalke 04 remains unbeaten for the second time in a row, but is unable to progress in the 2nd Bundesliga. Positive: During the draw against Hertha BSC, the future coach is already sitting in the stands and can see what’s wrong. And unfortunately that’s a lot of things in Gelsenkirchen.
The interim coach said goodbye with four points from two games, the successor was already in the stadium: Schalke 04 has taken a step out of the crisis in terms of sport and has also found a new head coach. Dutchman Kees van Wonderen watched the 2-2 (2-1) draw in the 2nd Bundesliga against Hertha BSC in the Royal Blues’ board box.
The former Feyenoord Rotterdam defender worked, among other things, as an Oranje youth coach and assistant coach to Bond coach Ronald Koeman, most recently at SC Heerenveen. The 55-year-old is set to succeed the fired Karel Geraert at Schalke in the next few days. Interim coach Jakob Fimpel is returning to the U23s after two weeks as agreed.
Kenan Karaman (24th) and Tobias Mohr (33rd) scored the goals for the Gelsenkirchen team, who gave up their first home win in 63 days in the final phase. Michael Cuisance (9th) and substitute Smail Prevljak (72nd, penalty) scored for the Berliners.
In his game as a professional boss, Fimpel had changed in one position compared to the lucky 2-1 win at Preußen Münster: Because Mehmet Aydin, who was ill during the week, did not play, a series continued – as in every game of the season so far, the line-up in the defense changed again . And it immediately showed its well-known weaknesses: Cuisance was not consistently attacked at 0-1.
But Schalke were convincing offensively: After several dangerous attacks, Karaman circled the ball into the corner after a one-two with Amin Younes for the deserved equalizer. The Royal Blues stayed on the pressure and turned the game around with Mohr’s goal before the break. But it wasn’t enough to make it three points because the guests equalized in the second half.
