Future of the PS: “The Nupes project does not suit me”, launches Stéphane Le Foll

What future for the left and the socialist party? Can the Nupes coalition last over time? PS mayor of Le Mans and former Minister of Agriculture, Stéphane Le Foll returned to the subject at the microphone of Jeanne Baron in Europe Soir week-end.

Opposed to the agreement between the PS, LFI and EELV, PCF, Stéphane Le Foll reaffirmed that he did not blame the Nupes agreement “because it is part of the strategies we know. The problem is that it was done after a presidential election, without working on a program or a project. On the proposals or the positions that Jean-Luc Mélenchon takes on the major questions of foreign policy, which are at the heart of what we must govern, we can clearly see that he “There are deep differences, which mark a tactical agreement made quickly to resolve an electoral problem. For the Socialist Party, this raises a fundamental question: can we remain in an agreement with Nupes when we see the differences that appear? “

“I want to participate in the refoundation of the left”

As for the possibility of creating his own left federation, the former minister remains unclear but says he wants to “promote the union of the left even if it must be refounded in terms of projects. The Nupes project, when I look at it in detail, whether on budgetary expenditure, whether vis-à-vis Europe or vis-à-vis international relations, does not suit me. The left must reflect on what it can and must do together”, he insisted, also rejecting a “radical or radicalized left which plays on the tension or even the confrontation with major street movements such as the big march that Jean-Luc Mélenchon wants to do in October, the risk is that we find ourselves in reaction with the most radical order.”

“I want to participate in the refoundation of the left,” he said. “This obviously involves creating something new, we are in an agreement with Nupes that Olivier Faure maintains while having a position which is not quite that of Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Will it last? There will be a clarification to be had and it must be anticipated. Is the socialist party capable of changing? I am afraid not.

According to him, “we must first put on the table a number of points of cleavage with the Nupes and with what was the alliance strategy. There are points of programs, projects, which do not correspond to the values, to the history of the socialist party and to what we must do for the future of France, Europe and the world. Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s line does not correspond to the traditional positions of the PS. These questions will be at the heart of the debate”, he concluded.
