Future premium smartphones soon to be as powerful as a game console?

A new leak claims that the next chip that will equip premium smartphones in 2025 will be as powerful as a game console. It will be able to run one of the most demanding games in the Play Store in its highest configuration. Unsurprisingly, it This is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, a Qualcomm SoC expected next October.

Every year, Qualcomm increases the power of its Snapdragon platforms. This isn’t the only change made, of course. Connectivity. Energy saving. Photography. Audio quality. There are many changes there. But, for several years, the emphasis has been on CPU and GPU performance.

2024 will be no exception. All previous leaks point to a further increase in the power of Qualcomm’s next high-end SoC, which everyone is already calling “Snapdragon 8 Gen 4” and which should be presented as early as next October. Or in less than 6 months. Among the changes expected in this SoC, the Kryo cores (customized ARM Cortex cores) should be replaced by Oryon cores that you find in the Snapdragon X Elite and the Snapdragon X Plus.

What will this new SoC be capable of? Everything suggests that the component will provide excellent performance. Perhaps even the best on smartphones, compared to other components from Apple and MediaTek. The processor speed could reach 4 GHz. And the AnTuTu score would exceed 3 million pointscompared to around 2 million points with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Another indiscretion confirms previous rumors.

Premium smartphones as powerful as consoles?

This comes to us from Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station. The latter posted additional rumors on Weibo which will especially interest gamers. According to him, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 would be capable of run Genshin Impact in native 1080p. The game will therefore be fluid, but also very beautiful: no smoothing of textures, no loss of graphic quality. This implies that the CPU part will be very powerful, but also that it will be supported by a GPU part which will not be unworthy. This is good news.

Obviously, bringing more power to the SoC has several consequences. First, the component will produce more heat. And manufacturers will have to find a way to dissipate it effectively. Then the platform will consume more energy. It will therefore be necessary to increase the battery capacity in high-end smartphones. And not just models intended for gamers, but also for others, since the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 should also be powerful enough to support more complex generative AI.
