Since the arrival of Luca de Meo at the head of the Renault group in 2020 and the announcement of the “Renaulution” strategy, the French manufacturer has been on all fronts and regularly announces several new features in terms of electromobility.
Between the launch of the new Renault Mégane E-Tech last year, the announcement of the future 100% electric R5 and 4L by 2024 and 2025, the launch of Mobilize, the arrival of a future large electric SUV … The topicality does not weaken at the manufacturer with the diamond.
And it should not weaken any time soon, since the French brand has just announced the redefinition of the contours of its alliance with Nissan and Mitsubishi. Renault and Nissan have formed an alliance since 1999, and the new terms of this agreement will run for the next 15 years.
The after electric Mégane with ultra-fast charging
If we could be surprised at the lack of synergy between electric Renault and Nissan, everything will change in the coming years. The two manufacturers have announced a new collaboration for the development of several C-segment electric cars. The first model in question will be presented from 2026. It will undoubtedly be a model that will arrive after the Mégane E-Tech that we currently know.
The two brands will share many elements, starting with a new 800-volt architecture. Already fitted to many models such as the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and other Porsche Taycans, it notably allows you to take advantage of faster charging, of the order of 18 minutes to go from 10 to 80%. But for now, we do not know the maximum power that can be collected by the car.
The future electric Nissan Micra will be produced in France
At the same time, the Alliance also announced the arrival of a new B-segment electric model produced in France. It will be a Nissan, and most certainly the future Micra which will be based on the CMF-BEV platform designed by Renault for the electric Renault 5 which will arrive in 2024. The electric Nissan Micra will be produced in Renault’s ElectriCity plant and will arrive in 2026.
Renault and Nissan will also work on a joint project, namely the FlexEVan, an electric utility vehicle that Renault announced in November 2022. In fact, it is Nissan who joins the diamond in this project and should bring its technical expertise in the field of 100% electric utility.
This will not concern us in Europe, but Nissan will take advantage of Renault’s experience in low-cost vehicles to launch several small electric models based on the Spring. These models will be aimed at emerging markets such as Latin America and India.
A new common charging infrastructure
In addition to new products, Renault and Nissan will also change several things in terms of distribution, particularly in Europe. Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi intend to develop a joint distribution network, with dealers who will distribute the three brands. These will make it possible to have synergies in after-sales service, financing and the used car divisions. Enough to allow the three manufacturers to make savings in infrastructure while multiplying its network.
The other interesting novelty, it is the joint deployment of charging infrastructures in Europe and at the dealerships of both parties. The two brands did not give more details on this subject, but these charging infrastructures should remain quite embryonic given the fact that they will simply be limited to dealers.
Finally, Renault and Nissan will also use common industrial partners for the recycling of end-of-life batteries. Remember that Renault, Veolia and Solvay have created a pilot plant in France to recycle the metals contained in electric batteries in a closed loop.
Renault had also announced the arrival of a “Re-Factory” in Flins, with the installation of a dismantling line for electric vehicles and batteries from 2024, in order to increase its capacity to recycle and clean. supply parts and materials in short loops.
Expected for 2024, the future electric Renault 5 should cost much less than the Zoé. But its performance in terms of autonomy could be disappointing for customers, yet already won over by its look.
