G2 Esports Wins BLAST Premier 2022 Global Finals

At the end of the last CS:GO tournament of the year 2022, the German team G2 Esports lifted the world crown by winning the finals of the BLAST Premier 2022, ending a dismal period of almost three years. It’s finally the consecration for G2 after a globally catastrophic year in terms of communication following the suspension of the ocelote boss and his sanctions on the VALORANT scene. But on the esports side, G2 Gozen won the VALORANT worlds while the LoL women’s team also won the world tournament. The structure, however, won nothing on the men’s CS scene with a second place at IEM XVI, and only obtained a title in the Spring Split of the LEC on LoL. Apart from a few showmatches and regular BLAST seasons, the last trophy raised by G2 on CS dates back exactly three years with the Champions Cup Finals.

At BLAST Premier, G2 had been eliminated in the quarters of the lower bracket in 2021 against NaVi and in 2020 under the exact same conditions. It was therefore with some trepidation that the players saw a potential confrontation coming during these World Final 2022 … which never took place. In the group stage, G2 were not the best team, ranking third behind TL and FaZe. In the playoffs, G2 initially beat Team Vitality (2/1), before joining FaZe for a clearer victory (2/0), and falling against Team Liquid in the grand final, won 2/0 (16-7, 16-12) without too much trouble.

Far from being favourites, G2 Esports had qualified via the season leaderboard thanks to their 5th place, far behind the first four with an almost flawless course (FaZe, NaVi, Heroic and Vitality), respective champions of PGL Major Antwerp, BLAST Premier Spring Finals, BLAST Premier Fall Finals and ESL Pro League S16. But the nugget m0NESY, crowned best young person in esport at the Esport Awards, sparked and was elected MVP. The new season can begin for them. See you in 2023.
