Gabby Petito case: cascading police errors?

Six months after Gabby Petito’s death, an independent investigation points to the many mistakes made during the police intervention with the couple on August 12, 2021 in Utah.

Several months after the disappearance and discovery of the body of Gabby Petitokilled by her fiancé Brian Laundrie before he fled and commits suicide, the case took a new turn. Indeed, an independent investigation unveiled on Wednesday 12 January reported the mishandling of the situation by the policeAugust 12, 2021.

At that time, the couple were still alive and argued violently after several weeks of traveling through American national parks. According to the investigation, the police team that filmed her meeting with Gabby Petito and her fiancé did not take the matter seriously and did lay the blame on the young woman rather than understanding that she was “not the predominant long-term aggressor in this relationship“. Indeed, the influencer had confessed to having slapped his mate who threatened to leave her on the side of the road.

Gabby Petito was probably “a victim of domestic violence for a long time”.

During their meeting with the couple, the police officers suggested to Brian Laundrie to lodge a complaint against Gabby Petito, have considered “his clothes looking for wounds“, offered him care and ignored the words of the young woman. The latter had however indicated that she had also been struck. The report states that “Even when Gabby reported an argument that resulted in injury, her statement was entirely ignored, as the officers appeared to be operating under confirmation bias that influenced how they interpreted the evidence and their theory of the case.“.

Finally, Brian Laundrie indicated that he wanted to give a new chance to his fiancée and one of the officers called the young man “Mr Nice“. Captain Brandon Ratcliffe explained that Gabby Petito had been “depressed“and that the young woman was probably”victim of domestic violence for a long time“.

If the management of the case of violence by the police is singled out by the independent investigation, it is however not possible to determine whether better care could have made a difference in this affair with tragic ending.
