Friday, January 21, 2022, the federal police announced that Brian Laundrie had indeed killed his girlfriend, Gabby Petito, in August 2021. According to a civil action filed Thursday, March 10, 2022, the parents of the young man are accused of having been aware of Gabby Petito’s murder.
In September 2021, the body of Gabby Petito was located in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. A medical examiner then determined that she had died by fatal strangulation. After a months-long criminal investigation, the FBI determined last January that her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, was responsible for her death. According to a civil suit filed Thursday, March 10, 2022, the girl’s family believe Brian Laundrie’s parents knew their son killed their daughter and thus helped him cover up the murder. In the lawsuit, it is stated as follows:We think, and so it turned out that… Brian Laundrie informed his parents, Christopher Laundrie and Roberta Laundrie, that he had murdered Gabrielle Petito. On that same date, they spoke with attorney Steve Bertolino and sent him a warrant on September 2, 2021.“
According to the lawsuit, it was after Gabby Petito’s family reported her missing that Roberta Laundrie allegedly blocked the phone number of her mother, Nichole Schmidt. Additionally, Brian Laundrie’s parents reportedly did not cooperate with the authorities. “While Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt desperately searched for information regarding their daughter, Christopher Laundrie and Roberta Laundrie kept Brian Laundrie’s whereabouts a secret, and it is believed they were arranging for him to leave the countryGabby Petito’s parents are said to be seeking at least $100,000 in damages today for the pain and mental anguish caused by the Laundrie family.

While Gabby Petito’s parents suffered immensely for not knowing what happened to their daughter, the lawsuit reads: “Christopher and Roberta Laundrie exhibited extreme and outrageous conduct which constitutes conduct, in the circumstances, which exceeds all possible limits of decency and is considered shocking, atrocious and totally intolerable in a civilized community.In a statement, Petito family attorney Richard B. Stafford said:Christopher and Roberta had multiple opportunities to reveal to Joe, Nichole, or the authorities that Gabby was no longer alive and direct them to her body. Instead, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie showed callous indifference to the suffering of Gabby’s family and added to her family’s anguish, pain and suffering through their actions. For this, Christopher and Roberta must be held accountable.“
