Galaxy A24, A34 and A54: Samsung wants to remove a photo sensor to save money


A Korean media claims that Samsung intends to remove one of the photo sensors on the back of the Galaxy A. The goal is to reduce production costs. For the moment, three models are targeted: the future Galaxy A24, A34 and A54, replacements for three models that have been sold in large numbers. The sensor concerned by this decision is the one responsible for calculating the depths.

You will have noticed a global trend in the world of mobile telephony: an increase in tariffs, whether at the mid-range or at the high end. Obviously the affordable segments are not spared by this inflation. The origins are always the same: rise in the price of raw materials, global shortage of components and difficulties related to logistics. And no brand is spared.

There are, however, two strategies for balancing the economic equation. Increase selling prices. Or reduce production costs. How ? By removing certain components from phones. This saves money. Of course, some market segments are more conducive to this second strategy: it’s hard to imagine making concessions in a high-end smartphone. On the other hand, on the mid-range, it is largely possible.

Samsung would remove the depth sensor from future Galaxy A

And that’s exactly what Samsung reportedly intends to do on the 2023 A line. The Electric published an article in which he announces that Samsung would intend to remove a photo sensor in three models in development: the Galaxy A24, A34 and especially A54. They will replace the Galaxy A23, Galaxy A33 and Galaxy A53. These are all equipped with four photo sensors. Their successors would therefore only have three. The choice of these three models is purely economic: they are the ones that will be manufactured in greater numbers, 60 million units between them.

The module that would be removed would be the sensor in charge of the calculation of depths. It’s a component that comes in handy for portrait mode, for changing focus in post production, and for retouching tools like the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro’s Magic Eraser. However, this function may also be supported by another secondary sensor. The Pixel 6, for example, uses the ultra-wide-angle sensor. So it would be easy to remove it without inconveniencing users.

The Galaxy A54 would therefore be equipped with a triple 50 + 5 + 5 megapixel sensor (main, wide-angle and macro), while the Galaxy A34 with a triple 48 + 8 + 5 megapixel module and the Galaxy A24 with a triple module 50+8+5 megapixels. It is very likely that an error has crept into the configuration of the A54, in particular on the definition of the ultra-wide-angle sensor. It would be interesting to study the rest of the photo configuration of these future Galaxy A to see if Samsung will not also cut back on other aspects such as optical stabilization, the AMOLED panel or even 5G connectivity.
