Galaxy AI: Samsung’s smartphone AI features will be available on older smartphones, but there’s a catch…

Samsung launched its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S24, at its Unpacked 2024 event and while there weren’t many surprises regarding the new devices, there was some unexpected news regarding older smartphones : they are getting into the AI era.

AI features are a big selling point of the new S24, including a generative editing function similar to Google’s Magic Editor, the ability to circle information in an app to launch a Google search, live translation, chat support that offers different tones for what you write, voice memo transcription and summarization, and more.

While some of these AI features are built into the smartphone itself and require that specific hardware, some of them are cloud-based and not handled on the S24. So some artificial intelligence features, according to Samsung, will soon be available on older devices.

New in June 2024

Here is the list :

  • The S23 series
  • The S23 FE
  • The Z Fold 5
  • The Z Flip 5
  • The Tab S9 series

The new features should arrive before June.

It’s unclear what features are coming, but they must be cloud-based ones, like photo editing, similar to how Google introduced Magic Erase on older devices. The most eye-catching features, like live phone call translation, work directly on the device, so they shouldn’t be accessible on older devices.

To taste or to stay?

Unfortunately, there is a catch. The features will only be available for free, according to Samsung, until the end of 2025.

It is not clear whether users will then have to pay to access these functions, or whether they will simply disappear.

Either way, having the much-vaunted AI features for about a year and a half will be a nice benefit for Galaxy smartphone users, and may be enough to encourage them to update or upgrade. pay when the time comes for a new Galaxy S24 smartphone.
