Samsung presented the long-awaited fan edition of its popular Galaxy S21 at the CES in Las Vegas. The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE (for Fan Edition) will appear in stores shortly and offers some innovations in contrast to the standard version. We’ll tell you what these are in our quick check.

Bigger display

When it comes to design, Samsung has not dared to experiment. However, there is one innovation here. The format and the display of the new S21 family member are slightly larger. Instead of the 6.2 inches of the S21, the S21 FE now has a 6.4 inch FHD + dynamic AMOLED display.

Nothing has been changed in the display technology. As with the standard model, the fingerprint scanner is located under the display. As with the S21, the front camera is integrated as a punchhole in the display, but with 32 megapixels (MP) it surpasses the 10 MP front camera of the “original”.

Snapdragon instead of Exynos

There have also been changes within the case. The S21 FE is equipped with a different chipset. Samsung relies on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 for the FE version. In the standard version, however, the manufacturer used the in-house development Exynos 2100.

Considering the performance, there should be no noticeable differences for most users. Both chipsets are premium models. The Snapdragon 888, on the other hand, is notorious for its significant heat development under load. With the Z Fold 3, however, Samsung has already successfully mastered this.

Battery and memory

In terms of battery, the S21 FE is much better equipped than the standard version. With a 4,500 milliampere-hour battery, the phone won’t run out of proverbial juice that quickly. Fast charging with 25 watts and wireless charging with 15 watts are also possible. The standard version, on the other hand, is equipped with a 4,000 mAh battery that is much narrower.

Two memory versions will appear. The Galaxy S21 FE will appear with 6 gigabytes (GB) of RAM and 128 GB of device storage as well as with 8 GB and 256 GB. The 6 GB variant takes the place of the “smallest” version of the product family in terms of performance. All other models are equipped with at least 8 gigabytes.

As already mentioned, the Fan Edition will be equipped with a much higher resolution front camera. Unfortunately, the opposite is the case with the main camera. With the Fan Edition you also get a triple camera, but the sensors have been redesigned.

The configuration consists of a 12 MP wide-angle, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle and an 8 MP telephoto camera. The telephoto camera of the S21 standard model, on the other hand, takes photos with 64 MP.

Price and availability

  • Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 6 GB + 128 GB: 749 euros
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 8 GB + 256 GB: 819 euros

The starting price of the model is below that of the Samsung Galaxy S21, but this is now also available from 688 euros “street price”. Whoever pre-orders now quickly, can “sweeten” the price with pre-order campaigns.

New top smartphones

The Samsung Galaxy S21 appears again in four versions: In addition to the S21, Samsung is also launching a Galaxy S21 FE, S21 + and S21 Ultra. These are the differences.

Netzwelt thinks

With the Galaxy S21 FE, Samsung is offering its fans more of an alternative to their own main model than building a bridge to the top models with improvements. Depending on whether you focus on more battery or camera power, you might prefer one or the other model purely from the data. Ultimately, the S21 FE stands in the way of itself due to the memory configuration and the price.
