Qualcomm, already a long-time partner of the number 1 in mobile telephony, today announces the extension of its partnership with Samsung. Their licensing agreement will cover, if not extended by then, seven years, until 2030, and cover 3G, 4G, 5G and 6G technologies. Various categories of products are affected by the agreement between the two firms, namely smartphones of course, but also tablets or “expanded reality” and PCs. Recall that the last model presented by the firm, the Galaxy Book 2 Pro, was powered by a chip signed Intel.
The announcement, unsurprising, however, is part of a larger news. The period is the publication of the financial results of the giants of new technologies for the second quarter of 2022, commented by their CEOs to their shareholders. It is in this capacity that Cristiano Amon, head of Qualcomm, delivered clues of choice to evoke the Galaxy S23 series from Samsung. Remember that, like every year, the flagships of South Korea are so far equipped with SoC Qualcomm (Snapdragon) in the United States and Korea, and Exynos in other markets. “What you have to say is that the Snapdragons will animate [les] Galaxy product lines [de Samsung], their flagship products. And what can I say to [cette] date is that we represented 75% of the Galaxy S22 before this agreement. We have to tell you that we are going to do much better than that for the Galaxy S23 and beyond”he specified.
The Exynos in the hot seat?
A statement that adds to the rowdy news of Samsung chips. The latest generation of Exynos SoCs, less successful than expected, is therefore likely to be abandoned on the Galaxy S23, or limited to a smaller number of markets
The South Korean giant, however, wants to be reassuring. As reported by Korean Mail Economic Dailyits CEO also spoke after the publication of its latest financial results: “We are currently revamping our SoC business model, and we are implementing measures to strengthen our competitiveness in the medium and long term. We are particularly focused on strengthening the competitiveness of our next generation of mobile Exynos.” However, it is rumored that Samsung is working on a new type of SoC, which could replace the Exynos series.
We will have to wait until the beginning of 2023 to discover the Galaxy S23 series and find out if Qualcomm fully equips it. By then, Samsung will have formalized its new folding models, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4, which will likely be equipped with Snapdragon chips, like their two predecessors, and will be formalized on August 10.
