If you thought Android smartphones were lagging behind in software tracking, that will soon change, as Samsung reportedly plans to update its next smartphones for no less than 7 years.

S24 series

While the official launch of the Galaxy S24 is fast approaching and we already know almost everything about the smartphones, including their technical sheet and their prices. However, our colleagues at Android Headlines have just revealed crucial information for the software part: the number of updates that we can expect.

Previous high-end smartphones from Samsung were able to benefit from 4 years of major Android updates, and 5 years of security patches. The Korean giant has always been one of the good students in this area, and it seems that the company is now ready to extend the duration of software tracking on its next devices.

Galaxy S24 will be updated for 7 years

According to Android Headlines, Samsung should now offer no less than 7 years of updates on its next Galaxy S24. This would include not only new versions of Android, updates to the One UI overlay, but also security patches. Since the smartphones are expected to launch with Android 14 and One UI 6.1, this means they can be expected to receive Android 21 and One UI 13 in several years. Only Google does as well with 7 years of updates on its most recent Google Pixels

Samsung would then offer the longest software tracking in the industry, sinceApple only promises 6 years of iOS updates on its iPhones. While Apple has always been considered an example when it comes to tracking its smartphones, the Apple firm is now falling behind its rivals. However, we know that the company has already had to urgently correct security problems on its smartphones up to 10 years after their release.

Now that two major Android smartphone manufacturers are promising longer tracking than Apple, this should encourage other players to do the same. OnePlus, Oppo and Xiaomi are currently far behindwith only 4 years of Android updates on their latest devices.
