Galaxy Unpacked preview: new folding smartphones, smartwatches, new S22 color and headphones?

SAMSUNG

The second Galaxy Unpacked event of 2022 will take place on August 10th. In addition to two new foldable smartphones, new smartwatches and a new color for the Galaxy S22 will probably be presented.

  • What is certain is that Samsung will present the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 on August 10th.
  • New smartwatches from the Watch series are also considered safe, including a new Pro model.
  • The S22 will also be available in the new lavender color. A new edition of the Galaxy Buds Pro may also be presented.

At the February event, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S22 devices, new tablets and much more. Preparations for the next event on August 10 are already in full swing and Samsung has also leaked a few things that could actually be presented.

Samsung’s promotional material for the Galaxy Unpacked event in August mainly features a new foldable. This is likely to be the Galaxy Z Flip 4, which is due to be unveiled alongside its bigger brother, the Fold 4, in about a week. We’ll show you what else Samsung has in store for the big event in our event preview.

Galaxy Z Fold4 and Flip4: New foldables with small changes

The highlight of the August event is probably the new versions of the two foldable series from Samsung. According to the latest leaks, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Flip 4 should only bring a few small changes – both in terms of design and performance.

In terms of design, the two new devices are very similar to their predecessors. The Fold 4 has a smaller external display and a large, tablet-like internal display. The Flip4 keeps its form factor, thanks to which it can be folded in half. The camera positioning also remains the same for both devices.

Latest Snapdragon processor, faster storage and S22 cameras

It goes without saying that Samsung will use the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in its new foldables, i.e. the fastest Snapdragon processor. Like last year, there will probably not be an Exynos version – the Fold and Flip devices are an exception at Samsung, because smartphones from other series usually only come onto the market in North America with a Snapdragon chip.

What else is expected? The storage versions should now start at 128 GB – possibly to create the possibility for a cheaper version. The internal memory is said to be a UFS 4.0 chip for the first time and thus offer double the bandwidth compared to UFS 3.1. The built-in cameras will probably be the same as those used in the S22 and S22+.

Double-sided fingerprint sensor and small changes to the display

The fingerprint scanner should be completely new in the Galaxy Fold 4. It should not only be placed under the display, but also work on both sides. This means that both the smaller external display and the large internal display should be operated by one and the same sensor. According to leaks, Samsung has been working on this.

There should be a few small innovations in the external display. It’s supposed to be a little lower overall and a little wider – so there’s a change in the form factor. Thus, the entire folded device is a little less high than its predecessor, but a bit wider. This should mitigate the rather strange look of the narrow front a bit.

Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro: No more bezel!

But away from the smartphones: New devices from the Galaxy Watch series are also to be presented this year. According to the latest leaks, Samsung is taking a radical step here. Because the classic version, as it was with the Galaxy Watch 4, should be dropped and with it the rotatable, physical bezel, which was previously a unique selling point of Samsung smartwatches.

Instead of a classic version, this time there should be a pro version. At 46 mm, it should be larger than the standard version with either 40 mm or 44 mm. One of the smaller changes in both models is the charging speed, which should now be 10 watts. In addition, both devices could have a larger battery.

Watch 5 Pro: First rugged Samsung smartwatch?

With the standard model, there should be almost no design changes. The watch will be very similar to its predecessor. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is different: there should be an improved, robust design. The display bezels are said to protrude upwards and provide a physical protective barrier from impact. In addition, there is probably a new, improved locking mechanism on the Pro model.

A mixture of sapphire glass and titanium housing should also contribute to the robustness of the smartwatch. There won’t be a physical rotating bezel, but the protruding display edge will likely make room for a capacitive bezel. This is already the case with the standard model of the Galaxy Watch 4, but thanks to the higher display edge, the user experience should be significantly better here.

Body temperature sensor, better battery life

Another feature expected from the Galaxy Watch 5 is a body temperature sensor. Not only could normal fever or hypothermia states be recognized without an additional thermometer. Early detection of Covid-19 or tracking of the female cycle would also be possible with a temperature sensor.

In addition, the battery life of the Galaxy Watch 5 should be significantly better. We’re talking about a battery with a capacity of 572 mAh – that’s around 60% more than the predecessor. This could extend the battery life of both models to up to three days. There should also be an LTE and a Bluetooth version again.

Other: Galaxy S22 in Lavender, Galaxy Buds2 Pro

The most important innovations at the Unpacked event will definitely be the foldables and smartwatches. And otherwise? A new edition of the Galaxy S22 is expected. The only change here is a new color: the smartphone will be available in lavender.

A new version of the Galaxy Buds Pro has also been leaked several times in recent weeks. A 3D render showed a slightly renewed design with a prominent wing. Unfortunately, it is not known which new features the in-ear headphones could offer and whether they will even be presented on August 10th – after all, Samsung has a fairly irregular release tactic for its earbuds.
