Samsung is expanding its range of connected watches with the Galaxy Watch FE, made official four days ago by the Korean giant. Since the Galaxy Watch Active 2 released in 2019, it has been a long time since the company offered a watch at such an affordable price.

Among connected watch brands, Samsung remains firmly anchored in the top rankings for Android users. Offering very high-quality products both at the high end (Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 or Galaxy Watch 5 Pro) and in the mid-range (Galaxy Watch 4 Classic), all it needed was an affordable watch to complete its offering. This is now done with the probable launch of the Galaxy Watch FE in the coming weeks.

Accessible but robust

For its FE, Samsung has chosen sapphire crystal for the screen, ensuring increased durability, significantly reducing the risk of scratches compared to conventional reinforced glasses. In addition to the choice of this material, it benefits from IP68 and 5ATM waterproof certification, making it ideal for swimming. The FE will therefore be impervious to dust and can be immersed in water up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.

Two versions will be offered: the Bluetooth edition at 219 euros and the 4G LTE version at 269 euros. Enough to seriously compete with the Apple Watch SE. For the sake of economy, it will take several elements from the Galaxy Watch 4: Exynos W920 chip, 247 mAh battery, 16 GB of storage space, 1.5 GB of RAM and a 1.2 inch OLED screen.

Ergonomic, with a few concessions

It will be based on a one-press bracelet mechanism which will considerably simplify its change. This system is compatible with the 20mm bracelets already used on other flagship models in the Galaxy Watch range. Several colors will be available: black, blue or pink and exclusive shades may be offered later on the official Samsung website.

Comparative

In order to maintain a truly affordable price, Samsung has skipped the temperature sensor, a feature present on more high-end watches. However, it still includes essential sensors for complete health monitoring such as a heart rate monitor and a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) sensor.

It will run under One UI Watch 5 and Wear OS 4, an interface known for its fluidity and responsiveness, as well as its fairly rich and customizable dial designs. No official release date has been given, but it is expected to be released this summer.

Once I woke up in the boat arriving in Morrowind, I got my finger in the gear. Another of my fingers was also stuck between the pages of books by classic authors: Charles Baudelaire, Émile Zola, Choderlos de Laclos or Victor Hugo to name a few. Twenty years later, a few thousand hours of playing, reading, and here I am! My heart always balances between my passion for tech, video games and my immeasurable love for Letters. Spoiler: I didn't choose and it's not likely to happen anytime soon.
