The foldables currently available on the market are expensive, very expensive. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is no exception with its RRP of over 1,000 euros. Samsung is also apparently aware of this and is rumored to be working on a significantly cheaper Galaxy Z Flip 5 alternative. Now for the first time there is a potential price range: 375 to 469 euros.
The statement about the price comes from leaker and Samsung expert Revengus on X (formerly Twitter). Surprisingly, in his price assessment he speaks of a new “mid-range foldable”, i.e. a foldable mid-range cell phone, the price of which Samsung has set at 400 to 500 US dollars. We have converted the above euro price for you according to the current exchange rate.
However, the English-language technology site SamMobile doubts that Samsung could bring a mid-range foldable onto the market at this competitive price. It is predicted that at this price significant compromises in performance would have to be made. In the end, the new foldable would actually be more “low class” than middle class.
For comparison: The Galaxy A54, which was introduced this year, cost just under 500 euros when it was launched in this country and it is not a foldable. SamMobile continues to argue with a comparison to the Galaxy S23 FE, which recently came onto the market in the USA for $600. The fact that Samsung sells a foldable at an even lower price must mean that the performance is significantly lower than that of the Galaxy S23 FE.
Samsung could only achieve this with compromises in the camera or hardware. Otherwise the device could only be sold at a loss. Pricing with a loss taken into account certainly exists. For example with game consoles, where the loss is recouped through software sales. It is doubtful whether Samsung can make up for such a large loss on a smartphone through accessories and the like.
We don’t think the price for the new Samsung foldable is really as cheap as the new rumor says. We consider a price of around 650 to 800 euros to be realistic if it is actually a mid-range cell phone.
But you should get the answer next year, because according to another rumor, Samsung’s new foldable will appear in 2024.
