As Samsung prepares to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 6, rumors suggest a major change in the folding screen design. According to the site The Electhe South Korean manufacturer would bet on an increase in the thickness of the ultra-thin glass (UTG), going from 30 microns for the Z Flip 5 to 50 microns for the Z Flip 6. This modification would make the folding of the screen almost invisible, a significant advancement for folding smartphone users.
Other manufacturers, such as Honor and Huawei, have already made notable progress in this area. Samsung, with its experience with five generations of folding smartphones, would like to improve this characteristic with the Z Flip 6. Folding screens being particularly sensitive to damage due to repeated bending, this new technology should therefore strengthen the durability of the device. Thicker glass would also offer better resistance to scratches and impacts.
Still according to these rumors, Samsung would once again opt for the teardrop-shaped hinge introduced with the Z Flip 5, a technology supposed to support up to 200,000 openings/closings. This hinge, combined with the thicker UTG, should provide better bend management and increased durability, without impairing usability. Improvements that don’t stop at the Z Flip 6: information relayed by the site Android Authority already mention a future increase in the thickness of the UTG for the Galaxy Z Flip 7, as well as a new hinge adapted to this development.
