In the galaxy of folding smartphones, the various manufacturers are waging a fierce battle to win the battle for innovation. With the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Samsung wants to take its hinge system to the next level.
While a new patent recently hinted at the possibility of seeing Apple launch its folding iPhone, Samsung is already working on the development of its future foldable screen.
Galaxy Z Fold 5: a brand new hinge, but…
The various manufacturers are constantly increasing their imagination in order to offer the most sophisticated smarpthones. And, obviously, folding devices are not immune to this competition, quite the contrary. Recently, it was Motorola who gave a big kick in the anthill with an external screen that would potentially be the largest on the market.
In 2016, a few years before the launch of its very first folding smartphone, the Korean manufacturer filed a patent that featured a teardrop-shaped hinge. This one has also recently resurfaced on the side of Samsung, since new rumors suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 could embark this new hinge. However, according to new data reported by The Vergethe latter would unfortunately not be more resistant.
… less durable than the competition?
According to information on the site The Electric, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 would currently have a hinge capable of withstanding “only” 200,000 folds. This is already the case with the Galaxy Z Fold 4. To give you an idea, by opening your smartphone a hundred times a day, this corresponds to about five years of use. For comparison, the OPPO Find N2, which also uses a hinge of the same type, can withstand 400,000 folds. After 200,000 folds, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 would then retain 85% of its original resistance.
As a reminder, this type of hinge in the shape of a drop of water makes the mark of the fold much more discreet, and, consequently, much less annoying. If Samsung seems, on paper, to be below its competitors in terms of hinge design, note however that it is the only manufacturer to benefit from an IPX8 certification with regard to the sealing of its devices.

We appreciate the quality of the screens, the computing power available and the possibility of using an optional stylus. Other points of satisfaction: IPX8 compliance, improved shock resistance and autonomy that we consider very correct, if not excellent.
The main camera delivers very beautiful fixed or animated images. And if the foldable display’s front camera isn’t as good as hoped, it has the upside of becoming invisible when not in use.
So would the Z Fold 4 achieve perfection? Not yet. The crease of the screen is still noticeable under the finger and visible in certain situations. Let’s bet that technological progress will be able to correct this.
