You probably missed this little nugget. And yet, with 98% positive reviews out of more than 10,000, it was undeniably one of the best games of 2023.

Chants of Sennaar, a nugget of originality made in France

“When you don’t have the means, you have to be original to stand out.” This is what Julien Moya, co-founder of the Toulouse studio Rundisc, explained to journalists from The Dispatch. And the least we can say is that he followed this maxim well. Chants of Sennaar, the Rundisc game released last September, is a little gem of originality. If it draws a little from different inspirations (the myth of the Tower of Babel, Return of the Obra Dinn, Moebius…), the title manages to stand out from them to offer a fairly unique experience of its kind. A proposal that quickly won over Focus, the publisher who agreed to take charge of publishing the game.

But then, what type of game is it? Well in Chants of Sennaar, you play a little guy who lives in a semi-open world whose languages and customs he doesn’t understand. It’s simple, you’re lost! And then little by little, with the help of discussions or signs, you manage to decipher the meaning of certain glyphs. Glyphs which will allow you to understand others and so on until you understand the words, the ways of speaking, the traditions of the different peoples whose paths you will cross as you progress within the The strange turn of Chants of Sennaar. People who do not understand each other and who you will be able to bring together again through language – the myth of the Tower of Babel is of course very present. And this unique proposition was able to seduce journalists as much as players.

A success at all levels

After more than an hour on the game, we were totally won over (see this article). And we weren’t the only ones. As you can see with the tweet above, journalist Jason Schreier spoke of the game as one of his favorite titles of the year, despite a 2023 year particularly full of big releases. On Metacritic, Chants of Sennaar scores a solid 85, and a nice 8.4 in terms of player rating. Because yes, the Rundisc title is appreciated as much by critics as by the public. On Steam, the game has recently passed the 10,000 review mark and yet still has an impressive 98% positive evaluations. Suffice to say that if you have missed the title until now, it is really time to give it a try. Because yes, there are still players who haven’t yet heard of Chants of Sennaar, and that’s a shame. Especially since he may soon be awarded an award.

Certainly, the title has already won a New York Game Awards and was notably nominated at the Tribecca Festival or the Game Awards, but the Pegasus evening could well constitute a real consecration for Chants of Sennaar. It is in fact nominated in no less than 5 categories, namely Visual excellence, Beyond video games, Best Game Design, Best Independent Video Gameand, the most coveted, that of Best video game. Chants of Sennaar is one of those independents who have managed to carve out a good place for themselves in the video game landscape and that’s a pleasure. Especially since this affects sales. Unlike other independent games that are very good but have unfortunately fallen by the wayside (The Wreck for example), Chants of Sennaar has had some success. We even learn in La Dépêche that the game was three times more profitable than expected. And inevitably, this allows Rundisc to put itself on the right track for the future with new projects: “the objective now is to hire! Two people this year and two more after {…} It will not be a sequel but a completely new concept which will take place in the same universe.” We can not wait to see the result !
