If some video games close their doors after a few days (The Day Before is the most recent and most telling case), others survive the ravages of time and even manage to revive the interest of players. One of the best Lord of the Rings video games ever made just received a major update 17 years after its release.

An immortal Lord of the Rings MMORPG

The Lord of the Rings Online is an MMORPG type video game (a massively multiplayer online role-playing video game) released in April 2007 on PC and OS X. The title developed at the time by Turbine still exists in 2024 and brings together fans of the universe created by JRR Tolkien at the beginning of the 20th century. However, the teams in charge of the project have evolved since the first days. After changing the game’s business model in 2010 to make it Free to Play, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment sold the rights to the game six years later to Daybreak Game Company, which entrusted future development to Standing Stone Games.

This change of owners and studios breathes new life into The Lord of the Rings Online, which welcomes a major update in 2017. The “Mordor” expansion brings an end to the game’s story. Subsequently, the updates focus on the events following the defeat of Sauron recounted in The Return of the King. Then Standing Stone Games has continued to add content ever since. The latest update arrived on March 13, 2024 in The Lord of the Rings Online.

Combat Arenas

Lord of the Rings Online update 39 is part of the “Corsairs of Umbar” expansion. It is therefore essential to have said extension to benefit from the new content added within the MMORPG. Beyond certain technical features including the Cluster of instances promised by the developers, This update offers Middle-earth players who have reached level 150 new “battle arenas” of which here are the details:

  • 2 instances with 3 players: The streets of Râhal Bakh, and the storm islands
  • 1 instance with 6 players: Dahäl Huliz, the arena
  • 1 raid for 12 players: the depths of Mâkhda Khorbo

Standing Stone Games also made fixes and improvements to the class and skill system, combat, crafting, events, items/rewards, some environments, and finally several missions. You will find the entire patch note on the official website of The Lord of the Rings Online.
