A 23-year quest completed

It’s not uncommon to see retro video games fetch prices in excess of tens of thousands of dollars at auction. If the most colossal amounts are often observed for very rare cartridges of Mario video games, other flagship licenses on the market are doing well in… gaming. Something that was observed recently with Castlevania, the first game of which, released on the NES in 1986 in Japan then in 1987 in North America, was sold for more than 90,000 dollars (+ 83,000 euros). A sum paid by @minus_worlds on Instagram. He declares :

The research ended after 23 years. I have resigned myself to never being able to add this holy grail after years of searching. But this week, a childhood friend and I managed to achieve this absolute beauty.

A precious object for him which represents many childhood memories. In his Instagram post, he adds that it was the first game his mother bought him and that he “still remembers the phone call we made to buy it”. A memory that is dear to him, now joined by this week of auctions where he was able to get his hands on the much sought-after game.

A nostalgic but also precious object

A treasure with a nostalgic dimension for him but which attracts the desire of collectors. The first edition of this 1987 Castlevania is rare. Following the sale, which took place on the eBay site, specialized pages explained why this purchase was not trivial.

Last night, an extremely rare and sealed 1987 Castlevania for NES sold on eBay for over $90,000. There are only 32 graded copies of this game in the WATA Pop Report. But what makes this game even more unique is that it has a hanging tab, which means it’s a first production copy. Of the 32 examples graded, only THREE are first production examples, with the highest grade being 9.2 A+. Judging by the looks of this copy, it has a very good chance of doing better. If so, it could be one of the highest-rated video games in existence.

Minus_world has therefore got its hands on what could be the rarest and best preserved copy of this first North American edition of Castlevania. Enough to potentially see it increase in value in the years that follow. This is what Instagram user @grailmonster explains. He too participated in the auction of this game and, despite the defeat, recognizes that Minus_world “deserved it much more than him”. He adds that he is curious to see the evolution of the value of this game and believes that it could reach an amount greater than 250,000 dollars.

To see what we intend to do with its recent buyer, but one thing seems certain: the nostalgic value of this Castlevania seems, for him, inestimable.
