While Dune 2 is breaking all cinema records, the desert planet of Arrakis is getting a makeover, but this time in a video game. Recently, numerous trailer and making-of videos have been released revealing new gameplay images and clues to the story of Dune Awakening. What is Dune Awakening?
Dune Awakening is a survival MMO developed by the Norwegian company Funcom and which does not yet have a release date. It features an open world set in the barren landscape of Arrakis, the main location of the Dune Saga and the only planet where the Spice, the rarest resource in the universe, is found. In terms of gameplay, the game wants to mix MMO and survival as best as possible, all in a vast open world.. Just like the recent Nightingale and Enshrouded, a build and crafting system will be present, although further details are still awaited. A new genre
Even if Funcom is used to survival games, particularly with Conan Exiles (2018), the open-world survival MMO formula is a new challenge. Jay, who was able to interview the project’s developers, says that the genre is absolutely compatible with the Dune universe. The different factions represented by the Harkonnen, the Atreides and the Fremen can be reminiscent of the factions of other successful MMOs like Warcraft. To the delight of early fans, the title takes place during the holy war which caused billions of deaths. More precisely, you will be a Spice exploiter in the service of the matriarchal organization of the Bene Geserit until the crash of your transport ship. The only survivor of this accident, you will have to survive in the middle of this desert and face the Fremen, thirst and all the other dangers that Arrakis reserves. As for the gameplay, and what Jay teaches us, Funcom has decided to put the MMO side forward, because interactions between players will be at the center of the title.
