The Steam Neo Fest is an opportunity to test many games with off-the-beaten-path concepts. This is for example the case of one of the most played games of the festival since it combines battle royale (extraction) and exploration, all with a first-person view.
Dungeonborne: one of the most played games of the Steam Neo Fest
The Steam Neo-Fest is coming to an end. Tonight at 7:00 p.m., it will once again be impossible to test the demo versions of hundreds of games. For my part, quite a few titles stood out. And after trying the ones that caught my eye, I decided to look at the most popular ones. I was already familiar with Backpack Battles (I talked about it here!), Rotwood, Pacific Drive or Stormgate. That left Dungeonborne. The title did not particularly attract me during a first profiling. However, I decided to trust the numbers: there must be something that explains its success.
Dungeonborne is described by its developers (who self-publish it) as a “Immersive PvPvE dungeon crawler“. A type of game that displays a certain success, like Dark and Darker for a long time in the top group of the most desired games on Steam.
Tema the size of the rat
In Dungeonborne, it’s about surviving and escaping the dungeon in which you are randomly placed each game.. A difficult task since many people want your skin. There are the local residents, straight from a bestiary of fantasy (skeletons, goblins, spell-casting flying eye, etc.). It’s also the other players (there are 16 of us per game) who will probably want your skin and the equipment you’re carrying around. And if death occurs, back to square one. All the eagerly collected loot disappears.
Game Modes
During the Steam Neo Fest, Dungeonborne has several game modes. There is Adventure mode, explained below, in which players wander the walls of a dungeon in search of an exit door. Two cards are available. There is also an Arena mode. Players compete in groups of 3. Practical for testing their equipment since players do not lose it in the event of defeat.

Not a fan of games like this, I fumbled around to find my bearings. I started my first games with a Swordmaster who I quickly abandoned for a thief: camouflage and petrification are much more useful abilities when playing alone, a fortiori when you come across entire opposing squads. The first minutes are enough to understand: everything represents a mortal danger since even enemies controlled by the computer kill quickly.
The storm is coming!
You must then be careful, collect as much equipment as possible while hurrying. Dungeonborne integrates, like battle royale games (Apex Legends, Fortnite, Warzone, etc.) a storm mechanic to force players to move (or even cross paths). You must then stay in the white circle (see map opposite) to avoid environmental damage.
That being said, all is not really lost in the event of a game over. Depending on the quality of his journey, the player gains experience points. These allow him to level up, which grants advantages. Increased number of life points, better statistics… A welcome compensation which in any case pushes you to restart a game until you come across the blue portal synonymous with victory. It is then possible to put our loot aside in a chest. It is also once outside the dungeon that you can trade with the NPCs in the menu (alchemist, blacksmith) to craft a more effective arsenal. It’s up to us to see if we take the risk of losing it in Adventure mode or giving it to opponents in the arena.
Overall, Dungeonborne is a very surprising game. In addition to its state (the game is in alpha, 0.2), it quite skillfully infuses several inspirations. If I had to summarize it in a few words, I would say that it is a mix between a battle royale, Skyrim and Diablo 2, of which it takes from the latter the inventory and loot mechanics but also the similar main theme. Its demanding gameplay does not make it any less addictive and even alone, you quickly get the hang of the game. It is therefore clearly not surprising that it is one of the most played games on Steam during this festival, especially since it allows multiplayer. Dungeonborne is therefore definitely one to follow.
