Last year, Lethal Company reminded us how tasty it is to have fun with friends. Now, it’s “Content Warning”’s turn to try its luck. We played there.

Content Warning has been available since April 1, 2024 on Steam in full version for €7.79.

Lethal Company has been emulated! A few months after the release of this cooperative horror game, here comes a certain Content Warning which uses – with a few details – the same principle. With three of your friends, you will have to explore the Old World, underground populated with traps, monsters and where it is pitch black. But unlike Zeekerss’ title, you’re not there to pick up debris. On the contrary, Content Warning will make you a star of “SpookTube”, a platform that loves scary and dangerous videos. With a camera for the whole team, you will have to get as close as possible to the local wildlife, even if it means losing your life, all to gain views. But at least one of you must stay alive and bring the gang back to the surface.

Cardboard director

Acting as a “director/influencer” is clearly THE good idea for Content Warning… In fact, we quickly get into the game, especially between friends: a presenter, a cameraman, a person who manages the sound with a boom, and a last person holds the “clap” and sounds the start (two items that can be purchased after one or two successful videos). And that’s not all ! With enough money, you can even treat yourself to emoticons and dances to put on a show right next to the creatures. There are also more powerful flashlights, ways to bring back a friend who died in battle.

Of course, it won’t just be enough to waddle in front of the camera. To increase views and earn SpookTube money, you will have understood, it’s the monsters that count! Content Warning will therefore force you to take risks to capture engaging images, and believe us, your health can decline very quickly. If it is the real who toasts, his camcorder will fall to the ground and the other players will have to recover it at all costs to bring the recording back to the surface. Each time, the team has three days to reach a view goal (3,000 to start).

Play dumb but not too much

Content Warning therefore encourages you to act stupid in a hostile environment, but not too much either… You can easily be nibbled by a monster which looks good on the screen – or even startled by a scream while it’s running! Moreover, the camera battery (like that of the lamps) does not last forever, and you will have to be careful not to capture anything or anyhow. Here, the case allows you to aim, zoom, and also benefits from a selfie mode, practical for immortalizing a chase.

But once you get back to the surface, you let go of the pressure and sit in front of the TV with your friends. In fact: rather than “stupidly” displaying your daily score, Content Warning reveals your rushes put together with a view counter and comments that evolve in real time! It’s the “best-of” relaxing moment that concludes every return from the Old World and it’s a treat to watch. We delight in everyone’s reactions, an absurd death, a crazy message from an Internet user. In the end, it just lacks indicators to understand which extracts bring in the most views.

In short, under its Lethal Company-like appearance, Content Warning was able to find its own personality thanks to this player-director concept. Even if we note less successful work on sound and atmosphere than at Zeekerss, the Old World and its darkness do the job: we get scared, we panic and we laugh… And above all, there is this projection at the end of the part, which encourages us to create small scenes and to organize ourselves like a real film crew. Yes, a nice discovery.
