Did George RR Martin participate, directly or indirectly, in the writing of Shadow of the ErdTree? This is one of the questions players have been asking since the announcement of the Elden Ring DLC. A question that comes back all the stronger following the broadcast of the first gameplay trailer. During our interview with the game’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki, we were able to get an answer to this question mark.

First involvement of George RR Martin

To everyone’s surprise, it is June 2019 that FromSoftware unveils its collaboration with author George RR Martin for Elden Ring. At the time, it was difficult to see what the game was, but the association of the studio behind Souls with the creator of the literary saga behind Game Of Thrones inevitably makes you salivate. At the time, it was the game’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki who justified Martin’s involvement in the project:

Thanks to Martin’s lore, the world and characters of Elden Ring naturally have more depth and personality (…) George RR Martin’s lore has been around since the early stages of development and has given us many inspirations. It depicts an interesting and complex relationship between the mystery and the player themselves, and gives us a multi-layered depth of what we can call “the story”.

A statement he supports by suggesting that “creating a scenario based on the video format” could limit the impact of his writing. George RR Martin is therefore responsible for creating what is called the lore, that is to say the entire story context of a work without it being linked to the main plot. The origin and past of the characters, the factual descriptions of the objects… Many aspects of a work constitute lore and it is quite easy to imagine how George RR Martin could be a prime candidate for a title like Elden Ring. Between royalty, remarriage, betrayal, medieval context and heroic fantasy, the setting of the game of the year 2022 is sufficiently close to that of Game Of Thrones to see some similarities.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the ErdTree: What involvement does the author of Gameof Thrones have for the DLC?

If some players can feel so well immersed in the world of Elden Ring, it is partly thanks to the work of George RR Martin. Enough to legitimately question the presence, once again, of the American author on the Shadow of the ErdTree DLC. Was he involved in any way? If yes, how ? During an interview with director Hidetaki Miyazaki himself, the JV editorial team was able to ask him the question. Here is his response:

George RR Martin was involved in the same way as for the base game. By that I mean he didn’t write anything new or specific for the creation of Shadow of the ErdTree. When it depicted the original mythos of Elden Ring, we took inspiration from that mythos to create the narrative of the game. In the same way, we took another part of that mythos, a part that was not explored in the base game, for Shadow of the ErdTree.

It is therefore from the work, visibly colossal, provided by the author first that the director and his teams have drawn. It is perhaps even, ultimately, thanks to George RR Martin and his contextualization that they had sufficient inspiration to make a DLC. And not just any one, since it remains the biggest one they have ever made. The appointment is now made: it will be June 21, 2024, on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series with the release of Shadow of the ErdTree.
