If you have any experience playing indie games, you may have noticed that certain themes and gameplay elements come up quite often. In any case, this is what this British comedian made fun of in a short video.
When independent games are a little too similar
While AAA have dominated the video game market for a long time, the independent scene is trying to stand out by offering less ambitious but often more original and artistic titles. Some have even managed to have phenomenal success like Outer Wilds or The Stanley Parable, to name a few. However, since the advent of independent games, platforms like Steam offer a huge number of different little games that are sometimes a little too similar despite a desire to do something more personal. It is this observation that made fun of Alasdair Beckett-Kinga British comedian with more than 100,000 followers on Twitter:
Chalk-style handwritten font, poorly detailed 3D textures, bright colors, disillusioned narrator, depressing context, introspective theme… we find almost all the clichés of independent games in this little video of barely a minute. Even the approximate platform phases are mocked there, right down to the use of a mechanic that plays on the hardware to mix reality with the game. If you’ve ridden the independent wave a little in recent years, it’s nothing doubt you will recognize some of these photos.
The same actor had already tackled games from the 90s
If you like this type of humor, know that this is not the first time that Alasdair Beckett-King has attacked the recurring clichés of a certain type of video game.
