A little-known Metroidvania on NES
Released in 1991 in Japan, Ufouria: The Saga is a title completely unknown to many people. Adapted in Europe and canceled in the United States, this cartridge signed by the publisher Sunsoft (a guarantee of quality) symbolizes the first appearance of the Hebereke franchise. In this adventure, the player plays a small humanoid character called Bop-Louie (who is a penguin in the Japanese version of the game) and evolves in a universe that echoes the great classics of the platform game.
Initially, the protagonist has no powers and makes his way by jumping on creatures that he can also use as projectiles. Then, very quickly, the game takes on the appearance of Metroidvania (a contraction between Metroid and Castlevania symbolizing progression in interconnected areas by obtaining objects and powers) with a hero who disguises himself as different entities that he challenges. You can swim, walk on ice, use your head as a weapon, jump higher, etc. The title is really very nice, well done, but it only had a weak impact upon its release. The opportunity to catch up with the return of Ufouria on Nintendo Switch, but also PC, Xbox Series and PS5!

Ufouria: The Saga is making its big comeback and it’s even more kawaii than before! The penguin (for this comeback, the developers took the Japanese character) enjoys a new adventure in which he will be faced with new dangers, randomly generated levels and even a pinch of roguelike! As in 1991, we find the gameplay of an old-fashioned platform game, but this time everything is mixed with modernized graphics (with a Yoshi’s Crafted World spirit), increased difficulty and new elements in progression.
So, even if the game is strongly reminiscent of the original, the developers used Ufouria 2: The Saga as a name because it includes many completely new areas and very catchy re-orchestrated music. Available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series since February 28, the brave Ufouria 2: The Saga should delight fans of indie and Metroidvania experiences. It’s also a good way to discover a saga, Hebereke, that few people know about. Over the last few decades, it has taken the form of a puzzle game (the most represented genre for this franchise), a fighting game, a racing game and is worth discovering.
