A free RPG has established itself in the list of the most popular games of 2024 and you will surely also be tempted to test it.

Paper Lily is a new horror RPG in a Japanese anime style, the first chapter of which has been available for free since January 26, 2024 on Steam. Only a few days after its release, the title ranked among the 10 highest rated games on Steam at the start of the year.

Unconventional horror

You may remember Project Kat, a little RPG Maker-style game released in 2021. To complete the complete story, it took around 4 hours, because several endings are available. Well know that this is the prologue of Paper Lily and that the developer Leef 6010 seems to have started on the same basis for this sequel. It’s not very complicated to check since you just have to rely on the Steam description of the game.

Something terrible has happened. You can’t bear to think about it, but you can’t live like this anymore. You stopped going to school, you haven’t left your house in months, you have no reason to get out of bed. There is no more choice.

We therefore dive back into an adventure based on psychological horror with a pixel art aesthetic and a story that breaks the fourth wall. In this way, it is reminiscent of titles like Doki Doki Literature Club or Undertale. For the universe, we feel notable inspirations from The Ring, and even Death Note. The gameplay like Project Kat consists of exploring the different environments to solve puzzles. And as with its predecessor, your choices will take you towards several paths and endings. Right now, the game has 98% positive ratings (out of nearly 600 reviews). If you ever want to test it, know that Leef 6010 has clarified that there is no need to play Project Kat to immerse yourself in chapter 1 of Paper Lily.

RPG Maker and horror

Paper Lily joins the long list of horror RPGs in the style of an RPG Maker. Some have left their mark on players like Yume Nikki for example, in which we explore the dreams of a young girl named Madotsuki where surreal, surprising and disturbing things are found. “Hello? Hell…o?” created by a man named Tachi immerses us in the story of Kazuki who will receive a call from his late girlfriend. Afterwards, strange things will happen in his room. RPG Maker is a limitless source of creation, who knows what new nuggets we will be able to discover.
