Acclaimed since its beginnings which changed everything in the field of video game horror, Resident Evil is a brand that matters: it has even been exported almost everywhere and notably in the Seventh Art, even if video games remain its primary material . And over time, it has evolved to adapt to its audience: first pure horror before making a change towards horrific action… to finally return to the thrills with a new FPS arc, started with Resident Evil VII and continued with Village in 2021.

While waiting for the next game in this “new” trilogy, Capcom has found the perfect way to keep players waiting: remakes! For once, the Osaka firm hits its mark, having already proposed a redesign of the first game at the time, on GameCube: we were thus treated to the excellent Resident Evil 2 Remake in 2019, the explosive Resident Evil 3 in 2020 and therefore Resident Evil 4 last year.

For now, tackling the monument that is Resident Evil 4 – an essential game in the field of action and which brought a lot to the genre when it arrived in 2005 – was a somewhat risky move: certainly, the basics of the original title are excellent, but sublimating its heritage (and above all not destroying it) was a real challenge. For now, we can say that the mission was successful since this remake proved extremely popular with a sumptuous average of 93% on Metacritic, or even a nice 18/20 in our columns. And above all, this critical reception went hand in hand with real financial success.

The information comes to us from Capcom itself : as of December 31, 2023, Resident Evil 4 has sold 6.48 million copies worldwide. As a reminder, the remake was released on March 23, 2023 on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series and Xbox One; It was even ported to iOS (via the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max) and Mac on December 20. With almost seven million sales in nine months, Resident Evil 4 established itself as the fastest-selling title in the saga, just that..

The best-selling title in the series remains the remake of Resident Evil 2 with 13.10 million takers, followed closely by Resident Evil 7 with 12.70 million sales. Resident Evil Village is at 8.70 million. In short, at this rate, there is a world that RE4 will one day take the top spot in the rankings, even if the game is not yet over: enough to motivate Capcom to make other remakes… Would Resident Evil 5 be next on the list?
