A game where anything is possible

Released last summer, Baldur’s Gate 3 managed to become one of the most popular games of last year, even winning the title of game of the year at the Game Awards. However, its success was far from obvious given the genre to which it belongs. A real role-playing game directly inspired by tabletop games Dungeons and Dragons, it is not always easy to get started if you have not already played this type of game. The games can be long, the turn-based system puts off some players, and the number of statistics and other Elements that occur from the creation of the character are not necessarily very welcoming. But where Baldur’s Gate 3 managed to stand out is that it is ultimately quite easy to get started even if you know nothing about the universe and the customs of the genre.

Better yet, the game from Belgian studio Larian has managed to keep everything that makes tabletop role-playing games so special and incorporate it into their title: the freedom to do almost anything, and the hilarity of randomness. For example, it is possible to move from the central battles to the plot just by talking to your opponents, or even to convince them to commit suicide rather than confront you. It’s simple, When playing Baldur’s Gate 3, you may get the impression that the developers have thought of everything, although there are still some limitations. All this inevitably gives some moments as ridiculous as they are funny, and this is what a player experienced from the start of his game.

Dying on your first roll of the dice, the definition of bad luck

It’s hard to believe that it’s possible to die in the first seconds of play in Baldur’s Gate 3, and yet, that’s what happened to a player. If you’ve played the game, you know that your adventure begins in the Nautiloid as your character wakes up after being infected by a Mind Flayer parasite. While it is still possible to lose a few life points by touching the container in the center of the first room, it should not normally be possible to die here. At least… if you don’t play with the Wild magic.

When playing with a Sorcerer, you can indeed choose to go with the “Wild Magic” subclass which allows you to use some powerful spells, but which risk turning against you in one way or another. On Reddit, the player WunWunSituation says that as soon as he left his departure capsule, he decided to cast a magic armor spell on himself to get his adventure off to a good start. No luck (and that’s an understatement), his first roll of the die ended with a catastrophic result and the Sorcerer summoned a Mephit instead of protecting himself with armor. Suffice to say that this creature is much too strong for a solitary level 1 character, and that the poor player did not take very long before dying in the first room of the game. We wish him a little more luck in his new part!
