The director of Final Fantasy 16 wants to make his game available to as many people as possible. A statement which could suggest a release of the title on the competing console of the PS5.

Coming soon to Xbox?

This Saturday, June 22 marked the first anniversary of Final Fantasy 16still today only available on PlayStation 5. Since then, the title has had two DLCs – Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide – and, to celebrate the event, its director – Hiroshi Takai – has reaffirmed on (formerly Twitter) working hard on the PC version.

But on top of that, the director says “wanting to make Final Fantasy 16 accessible to as many people as possible” before concluding his message with “stay alert”. A few words synonymous with hope for players which could, perhaps, mean that the title will benefit, in the more or less near future, from a release on Xbox Series X/S. Some are therefore wondering about a surprise arrival of the game on Game Pass, even if it is only the PC version. To be continued.

New strategy

Despite a fairly positive critical reception, Takashi Kiryu – president of Square Enix – noted that Final Fantasy 16 had, like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, not achieved its sales objectives either. A situation which could improve with the arrival on Game Pass, helping in particular to reimburse its development costs. The latter, although unknown, had notably pushed Naoki Yoshida – producer of the series – to be surprised that Square Enix had allowed “spend that much” in an interview on YouTube.

Nevertheless, Square Enix suggests that the PC release of the title will make it possible to achieve the sales objectives set by the company, all after 18 months of operation. Statements which undoubtedly aim to reassure players and investors, especially following the lack of news and progress regarding Dragon Quest 12: Flames of Destiny, still absent subscribers. A silence notably inherited from the almost complete restructuring of Square Enix which must, according to its director, produce visible results within three years. A new strategy therefore, the aim of which is to focus on quality to the detriment of quantity. Smaller projects will be subject to particular analysis and will be decided based on their profitability. In this sense, producers will be less all-powerful than in the past so that teams can share their ideas more easily.
