The studio in charge of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s zombie mode has just announced that it is withdrawing from the project. While many speculate on the reasons for this withdrawal, there are indications that the studio is looking at another project.

If the Call of Duty license continues to sell games in droves, it is perhaps thanks to one of its spearheads: zombie mode. Appeared in the opus World at War in 2008, it has since been one of the most recurring game modes in the series and acclaimed by fans. Treyarch, its historic studio, having worked on the different iterations of the mode, has just announced that it has abandoned the project.

Head elsewhere

During an interview for CharliIntel, Treyarch announced that it would leave the development of Zombie mode behind of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. He also states delegate the conclusion of the mode to Sledgehammer Games, developers of the main game. If the studio did not provide a clear reason for this sudden stop, it nevertheless suggested that its teams were “focused on something exciting already on the horizon”. Indeed, the next opus of the series not officially announced – Black Ops Gulf War – could be the famous exciting project that Treyarch is focusing on.

This announcement, although it provoked a reaction, is nevertheless not surprising. Fact, lack of content of Modern Warfare Zombies added over the last few months is quite telling. The last update only contained one new mission, far from satisfying undead fans. In February, after the announcement that Treyarch admitted not having planned any new enemies or content, players were already assuming the death of the mode, barely three months after its release. We suspect that the studio was already potentially looking at the next episode, inexorably abandoning the current opus.

An abandoned community

Zombie mode Modern Warfare 3 had a dazzling launch, seeing players rush into the heart of the game, deal with different bosses and discover different easter eggs. And while the mode was initially regularly updated, the trend quickly reversed. The players’ anger slowly grew until it exploded during MW3 Season 2 update, adding nothing to zombies mode.

Whether it’s a lack of bug fixes or a simple lack of content, players have said be abandoned by Activision and Treyarch. On the game’s Reddit page, we can read testimonials explaining that “Modern Warfare Zombie is unstable (…) in all games, it freezes or crashes” when another states that “the game looks more and more like a money pump. They just don’t care”. We wait Call of Duty Black Ops: Gulf War for this year which is also expected to launch with its own zombies mode. Fans are now hoping that this new game will receive more attention from Activision.
