Game news The remake of the best Star Wars video game of all time is being talked about again: Space Marine 2 studios are confident
Star Wars fans no longer know where to turn as there are so many announcements and other projects, all media combined, in 2024. Between films, series and video games – released or in development – the universe by George Lucas extends to infinity. Among them, the remake of the best Star Wars video game of all time has experienced many setbacks since its official release. But Saber Interactive (Space Marine 2) is confident.
A complicated development for the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
In September 2021, during the PlayStation Showcase organized by Sony, fans were amazed to discover that the best video game adaptation of Star Wars ever made will be entitled to a remake developed by Aspyr Mediaa Texan studio specializing in portages for nearly 30 years. Some members of the original development team then officiate on the long-awaited return of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Since then, this video game has gone through all the emotions and the players with it.
In May 2022, Embracer Group announced that the Saber Interactive teams were strengthening those of Aspyr Studio, which is by no means bad news. Studio having recently released the masterclass Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, it is considered an expert in porting with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and World War Z on Nintendo Switch to its credit. Then things get complicated. According to Bloomberg, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is postponed indefinitely in July 2022 before Aspyr Studio was stripped of the project a month later. The latter is then transferred 100% to Saber Interactive.
The year 2023 is not kind to all those who are feverishly waiting for news of this remake. Rumors of cancellation ignited the internet in May without these being confirmed or denied. It was then the turn of the only trailer and posts on X (formerly Twitter) to simply disappear during the summer. However, hope was reborn in December when the head of Disney games declared:
I can’t say much about it for reasons that I hope are obvious, but Star Wars KOTOR is obviously an incredibly popular game, one that we’re extremely proud of and we think there’s still a high demand for this one. I’ll leave it there. – Sean Shoptaw (Head of Gaming – Disney)
The video game ogre that Embracer Group has become by dint of multiplying acquisitions is rejected in March 2024. Saber Interactive separated from the Swedish giant last spring and took with it 38 projects under development, including a certain Star Wars video game. Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch confirmed the information to our colleagues at IGN last April:
It is clear and obvious that we are working on this game. The press has spoken about it numerous times (…) and we are determined to exceed consumer expectations. – Matthew Karch (CEO – Saber Interactive)
A remake project still alive?
The consummate divorce between Embracer Group and Saber Interactive puts the latter in a precarious financial situation in March 2024. Despite the thunderous success of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, the North American company must quickly find cash to pay off debts contracted with the Scandinavian firm during the separation. Good news, Saber Interactive has attracted new investors – Capital Partners and Crestview Partners – who have put their hands in their pockets to allow the studios to fully regain their independence and thus devote themselves to the development of their various titles. There is talk of the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but also of Jurassic Park Survival. No release date has yet been communicated for KOTOR.
