While the license has been at a standstill for almost ten years, Starcraft fans have decided to revive their favorite franchise through an ambitious mod. After years of development, the project is finally coming to an end and the result is impressive.
Since the release of the Legacy of the Void expansion in 2015, the Starcraft license no longer gets much attention and no longer seems to be a priority for Blizzard. While Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2022, the great strategy game series is at a standstill. Faced with this non-existent news, fans have decided to take matters into their own hands with an ambitious mod: Mass Recall.
One of the most impressive Starcraft mods
In reality, the project dates back to 2014, barely two years after the launch of Wings of Liberty. At this moment, a group of fans takes on a colossal challenge: to remake the entire first Starcraft and its Brood War expansion in Starcraft 2. If the two games share a lot of elements in common, the project is still massive as its creators have applied themselves to the task. Thus, the 3D models of the units have notably been redone to correspond to the sprites of the first game. This shows the level of involvement. In 2015, the mod already made it possible to redo the entire campaign of the original game and its extension within Starcraft 2. However, the fans are far from stopping there.
In 2019, Mass Recall has revealed its version 7.0 which even features completely redone cutscenes in the Starcraft II engine. This goes even further since the mission briefing screens have been recreated in high production from the Starcraft 1 remaster, but with the 3D and HD models of SC2. And despite all this work already done, well that’s not all that this mod includes. In addition to everything we have just described, Mass Recall even incorporates Enslavers Redux, a campaign created by other fans for the original Starcraft and which is considered one of the best of its kind within the community. It just goes to show that even though Blizzard hasn’t been promoting Starcraft for several years, fans know how to take matters into their own hands.
