Super Mario Maker, released for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, allowed gamers around the world to become level creators. With its tools taken from numerous episodes of the series, the title has given life to a passionate community.
With the imminent closure of the 3DS and Wii U servers on April 8, the community of the first Super Mario Maker embarked on a race against time to complete all the levels. The players came together under one banner, the Team 0%, and chats on a Discord which has more than 12,000 members. They exchange techniques and tips to overcome this challenge. A month ago there were 178 levels left, today there are only 5 left!
The Last Battle: Trimming the Herbs
Among the few remaining levels, “Trimming the Herbs” stands as an ultimate challenge. Created by Ahoyo, a Canadian player, this 17-second level has become a real nightmare. It requires perfect execution in order to overcome the formidable Piranha Plants and collect 5 key fragments. The course was created in 2017 during a tournament to choose the most “unique” and “cool” course.
Its creator had no idea that, 7 years later, it would continue to terrify the community. “I tried to complete this level but couldn’t pass the first section, I gave it one star though. Great job” comments for example a player on YouTube. Team 0% published on March 13, 2024 a “bonus” (in their words) of $100 for anyone who manages to defeat Trimming the Herbs.
