Rise of the Ronin unavailable in South Korea

This is one of Sony’s major exclusives planned for 2024. Rise of the Ronin is awaited by many players and could well meet with some success when it is released next March. However, the new Team Ninja game will be unavailable in one country: South Korea. A decision confirmed by a Sony spokesperson ofIGN.

On the other hand, we learn that the game was not canceled in the country, but rather that it was never originally planned, contrary to the information that was recently relayed. “Rise of the Ronin’s release in South Korea has never been officially announced. We can confirm that the title will not be sold or published in South Korea in any form, whether physical or digital.“, declared the Sony spokesperson. This unavailability would therefore have nothing to do with the controversy surrounding the game.

Unavailability with unclear details

Still according to IGN, several Western media have announced the cancellation of the release of Rise of the Ronin in South Korea, citing different blogs in the country. According to these sources, which have no real basis, the game was canceled even though the Game Rating and Administration Committee (GRAC) – the equivalent of PEGI – had previously evaluated it. However, the GRAC evaluation cannot indicate a cancellation since previous titles have already been evaluated without ever being released in South Korea, like the PS4 version of
Mortal Kombat 11 For example.

There is, however, a Korean version of the game. The title page on the Indonesian Playstation Store shows for example the implementation of Korean texts. What’s more, the software would have been presented on the Korean Playstation Blog in 2022, although this page has been deleted in the meantime.

Rumors finally suggest that the game’s cancellation occurred after director Fumuhiko Yasuda’s statements. Last week, a making-of video posted on Playstation Japan’s Youtube account showed the director praising Shō in Yoshida, a controversial Japanese historical figure.

A controversial figure who recalls the heavy Japanese past and the colonization of Korea. In view of his statements and the reactions they aroused, Sony has therefore decided to cancel the release of Rise of the Ronin in South Korea. However, we will have to be content with the official version from the giant, which says it has never planned to release the game on Korean territory.
