We didn’t hear much about it anymore. However, the PlayStation Portal is still there. Sony has just released an update that should please users of the accessory.

Public Wi-Fi goes through the gate

Ha… PlayStation Portal. A funny accessory that divides. There are those who find it super practical, and those who find it not very useful. As its name suggests, the Portal is a kind of “portal” at a more or less long distance to your favorite console. It’s not there to walk on the Steam Deck’s toes because here, everything is done in streaming. It is therefore not a console in its own right, but rather an accessory to connect to your PS5 which allows you to play on something other than a television.

Sony has just announced the deployment of an update to its system adding various improvements for its users. Among them we find support for a login screen for public networks. Thanks to this update, the PS Portal will be able to connect to a variety of public Wi-Fi networks which may require validation steps other than entering the network password, as the Japanese manufacturer informs us. This should suit players using their PS Portal outside, even if Sony reminds that it is better to play with your object at home.

Welcome additions

PlayStation also explains that it has added new visual feedback to the touchpad areas. “New effects will be displayed when using areas of the touchpad with Remote Play” confirms the manufacturer. And that’s not all, it is now finally possible to display the remaining battery percentage on the status bar, in the upper right corner of the screen. Better late than never, right?

Since the release of PS Portal last November, we have been overwhelmed with enthusiastic response, and our community has found many ways to enjoy their games on PS Portal. Sony, official press release

The Japanese firm takes the opportunity to affirm that the PS Portal allows many players “to access their games more easily, with PS Portal owners’ average PS5 play time increasing during the 8 weeks following their PS Portal purchase. “We are so grateful to the PlayStation community for their support as we seek to deliver innovative gaming experiences”, we can read.
