Rather than pulling the plug when the servers shut down, the developers of this online game found a simple solution: modify their title so that they can now be played without internet.

In the brilliant world of video games, there are titles that require a mandatory internet connection, even if we’re talking about a primarily single-player experience with a hint of multiplayer. And in this case, when the servers close (it’s not all free), it’s the entire game that closes. This is, for example, what happened recently to The Crew of the first name. The case of Ubisoft’s racing game has awakened an old discontent. In an age where we can pull the plug on a title overnight (whether it’s a digital or physical version for that matter), do we really own it?

This is how life goes

Moreover, a few days after The Crew’s funeral, Ubisoft announced that there would be an offline mode to “ensure long-term access” to The Crew 2 and The Crew Moterfest. A path that Islands of Insight also follows – a puzzle game in a “shared world” where several players can connect at the same time and solve various puzzles.

But this cooperative aspect will soon be a thing of the past… On October 30, 2024, through a final update, Islands of Insight will shut down its servers and become an offline game (for good). “All of this will allow the title to continue to exist (…) while we focus our efforts on our next projects,” commented Lunarch Studios, in a recent message published on Steam.

We see offline

For our colleagues at PC Gamer, the end of Islands of Insight’s online mode is “not a big loss”. According to the media, “the interactivity with other players was never very good” and was even among “the notable weaknesses of an otherwise very good puzzle game”. Indeed, the approach of the Lunarch studio is rather original for the genre, a vast open world where we can move (and even fly) for “more than 10,000 puzzles” at our own pace… Players who have already started in the adventure have until October 30 to transfer their progress from the online version to offline. Obviously, after this date, the title will keep its price of €29.99. It’s available on Steam.
