Game news “We don’t have many franchises”, the statement of Sony executives enrages gamers, what about the PS1 and PS2 licenses?
For Sony to remain a major player in the entertainment industry, its boss says it needs to produce more original creations.
The dream of hegemony
Is Sony lacking exclusives? That’s what Kenichiro Yoshida, the company’s boss, thinks in a interview in the Financial Times early September.
Whether it’s games, movies or anime, we don’t have a lot of intellectual property that we’ve favored from the beginning. – Kenichiro Yoshida
A shortcoming that the CEO wants to resolve with a $10 billion plan. According to Sony, this investment is necessary to stay in the race against Netflix, Amazon or Apple. The Japanese firm operates in several areas: music (Sony Music Entertainment), video games (PlayStation) and films (Sony Pictures Entertainment).

In the same article, Atul Goyal, financial analyst at Jefferies, explains: “ One thing that (a company like Sony, editor’s note) needs is intellectual property. “This is the point that Sony is focusing on today, which is apparently essential: “we are already missing the first step (that of intellectual property) and that is a problem for us,” says Kenichiro Yoshida.
Sony is already a major player in the industry and it wants to stay that way!
However, the Japanese company does not lack big licenses of its own. On the film side, Ghostbusters and Venom are world-famous titles. Regarding video games, PlayStation already has recognized licenses. We can mention The Last of Us, which, thanks to its success, was entitled to its adaptation into a series by HBO. Sony also has Uncharted, which was also adapted into a film in 2022. For music, Sony does not have to pale in comparison to the competition since the firm works with big names in music such as Lil Nas X, Doja Cat and 21 Savage.
What about all the beloved classic IPs that haven’t had a new entry in decades that were just shelves and forgotten about? Do those not count or something?

What about all the beloved classic franchises that haven’t had a new entry in decades and have simply sat on shelves and been forgotten? Does that count for nothing? – @Plasmaposting on X
A plan of attack
To consolidate its position in the entertainment field, Sony also acquired Crunchyroll, the famous anime streaming platform, from AT&T (American telecommunications company) in 2021.. And that’s not all. The company has also invested in the Unreal Engine, developed by Epic Games, useful as an engine for video game development as well as for the creation of digital sets and visual effects in cinema. Sony explains that it is giving itself 10 years to “project social changes and technological evolution” that he aspires to.
