If Nintendo and Game Freak have found a real goose that lays golden eggs in Pokémon, some fans are also trying to make the most of it! There was one who got caught red-handed.

This is not new, Nintendo is not kind to those who are after its intellectual properties… At the start of the year: the Japanese company, for example, launched an investigation into the video game Palworld – the famous Pokémon with guns -, jointly with the Pokémon Company. The objective? Determine whether the title, developed by Pocketpair, was indeed inspired by pocket monsters. But, Nintendo doesn’t necessarily need to police itself. Recently in Japan, a 36-year-old man was arrested for selling modified Pokémon Purple saves!

Hand in the bag

It was during an online patrol that the Japanese police caught our man red-handed… From March to December last year, the individual used a “special tool” – downloadable for free – in order to modify files of the latest Pokémon to date. These files, corrected to reveal “rare” species (sometimes according to customer request), were then resold online at a variable price. This includes an ad: 6 monsters for 4,000 yen (around 25 euros). The thirty-year-old would have even made sales at 13,000 yen (around 90 euros).

To make a living”

Except that, apart from disrupting the balance of the game and representing a loss of profits for Nintendo, the practice is illegal under the Unfair Competition Prevention Act of 2019. In doing so, according to the site Automaton, all of which is punishable by a sentence of up to five years in prison – and a fine of maximum 5 million yen (nearly 30,000 euros). What’s more, the Japanese police’s investigation is ongoing, as the total sale of illegal backups could be in the millions of yen. For his part, the individual admitted the facts, just wanting to “earn his living”.
