In the world of video games, speedrunning occupies a significant portion of players, but remains unknown to the general public. For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, a speedrun consists of completing a challenge, or an entire game, in the shortest amount of time. Among the many criteria that can be found, the two best known challenges are Any% and 100%. The first is to simply complete the game, but the second requires players to complete the content by completing all the quests and challenges offered there. Less than a month ago, a player achieved a feat by breaking a new record in the first Pokémon game in Any%. However, a controversy over suspicion of cheating tarnished his reputation.

An initial record impossible to beat
Let’s remember the facts. On January 25, 2023, the player Pokéguy achieved “the greatest record in the history of Pokémon games”. He actually finished Pokémon Red, the first in the main license, in 1 hour 44 and 3 seconds. For those unfamiliar with the license, this is an extraordinary feat considered by many to be impossible to beat. The percentage chance that the events that happened during this speedrun occurred is so tiny that it is not possible to repeat the feat. However, records are being broken and hundreds of players have rushed to achieve it, in vain. But to everyone’s surprise, one player achieved the feat. However, it turns out that his performance is not as flawless as he claims.
Cheating in Pokémon?
For the Pokémon community, this is a true miracle. While Pokéguy had everyone agreed that his record was unattainable, another player beat him by a few seconds. This is Jadiwi who put his name in the world of speedrunning by finishing Pokémon Red in 1 hour 43 and 52 seconds, 11 seconds less than the old record. However, instead of marveling at this new feat, the community was wary of this new record, too easily broken according to them. This is why several days of investigations followed, following which a serious verdict emerged for Jadiwi.
The contest’s moderation team decided to ban the player from all Pokémon speedrun leaderboards and deny him access to any other speedruns. In a document published a few days ago, we learn that the record speedrun had been recorded previously, which the player had not told the moderation teams. Additionally, Jadiwi himself admitted to recording several attempts. Now that the truth has been revealed about this matter, the community hopes that Pokéguy’s record will one day be broken, this time by an honest player.
