The heroic-fantasy series war will indeed take place this summer! On August 22, the first episode of House of the Dragon, a prequel to Game of Thrones, will be offered on OCS (and on HBO Max in the United States), while the broadcast of the series The Lord of the Rings, entitled The Rings of Power , will debut on Amazon Prime Video a few days later, on September 2.

A remote duel of series, but also of platforms, the simultaneous programming of these two blockbusters will inevitably give rise to a form of rivalry. And indeed, the hostilities were triggered by the writer George RR Martin during an interview with our colleagues from the newspaper The Independent.

If he wanted both series to be successful, the author admitted that his competitive spirit makes him hope that House of the Dragon will win more awards than The Rings of Power. “If they win six Emmys, and I hope they do, I hope we win seven.”

Intrigued by the concept of this Lord of the Rings series, George RR Martin also confided in wondering about the turn this adaptation will take, since the rights to the books have not been purchased by Amazon: “It’s a weird deal, Amazon bought the rights to Tolkien, but not the rights to his books. They don’t have the rights to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, or The Silmarillion (…) but they have the Appendices . I imagine they’re going to build a Second Age mythology out of that. There’s a lot of material, so it’ll be interesting to see what they’ve done.”

House of the Dragon, a prequel set a hundred years before the Game of Thrones plot, will air on OCS from August 22. The Rings of Power, which traces the creation of the Rings several centuries before the adventures of The Fellowship of the Ring, will be broadcast exclusively on Amazon from September 2.
