Game of Thrones: HBO Max problems affect future spin-offs – but there is hope

GAME OF THRONES

After the end of “Game of Thrones”, the successful fantasy epic is to receive heaps of spin-offs. But massive problems with the streaming provider HBO Max are jeopardizing these plans. According to author George RR Martin, we still have hope.

  • After the end of the fantasy series “Game of Thrones”, the franchise is to receive numerous spin-offs.
  • However, these are threatened by Discovery+’s acquisition of HBO Max.
  • George RR Martin reports in a blog entry how his planned “GoT” shows are currently doing.

Will the Iron Throne of Westeros soon remain vacant forever? The US streaming service HBO Max, which is responsible for “Game of Thrones”, is currently having major problems. The platform has discontinued numerous of its series within a very short time or canceled them before the right planning.

After the great success of the “GoT” spin-off “House of the Dragon”, numerous other prequel and sequel series to the popular franchise should actually follow. But the chaos at HBO jeopardizes those plans.

On his personal blog, Not a Blog, George RR Martin posted an update on his work, which also includes his spin-off series on HBO Max.

We’re currently working on House of The Dragon 2 and other spin-offs we’re developing with HBO. Some of these move faster than others, as is always the case with development. So far no green light has been given. Maybe soon. A few spinoffs have been shelved, but I wouldn’t say those are dead. You can take something off the shelf just as easily as you can put it on. Of course, all the changes at HBO Max have had an impact on us too.

In the summer of 2022, the HBO parent company Warner Bros. merged with the media giant Discovery. The resulting entertainment giant, Warner Bros. Discovery, has therefore decided to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into one major streaming service.

The plan is to be implemented in the summer of 2023. The HBO Max brand will thus disappear completely. The consequences of the merger are numerous cuts and cancellations of popular and well-known series. “Minx”, “Legendary”, “FBoy Island”, “Sweet: Life Los Angeles”, “Love Life” as well as “The Nevers” and “Westworld” will no longer be produced.

So far, it seems like spin-offs like House of the Dragon or the previously announced Jon Snow spin-off are safe from cancellation, but a total of five spin-offs have been pre-announced so far and of those, some could have caught.

Among them is an adult animated drama and a series based on Martin’s “Dunk and Egg” book series.

But what about the “Game of Thrones” franchise, not even George RR Martin can say exactly. The only thing that is certain is that we can look forward to “House of the Dragon” season 2 in 2024. No matter what happens on HBO Max.
